Calcium Hyroxyapatite caps: Does anyone take them and please give pros and cons if you can.

I took NOW calcium hydroxyapatite caps 500 mg daily until about a year ago. After going through the bottle containing 120 capsules, I started on Solaray calcium magnesium 2:1 ratio (containing calcium amino acid chelate complex, calcium carbonate, calcium hydroxide/ magnesium amino acid chelate complex, magnesium oxide plus glutamic acid HCL 100 mg). (I also take other supplements.)

My question: Does anyone else take calcium hydroxyapatite??? I would like opinions on the pros and cons of this supplement. For example, has anyone's rheumy mentioned this supplement? Is it better than other kinds of calcium?

Although there is more bioavailable calcium per gram in Calcium Hydroxyapatite and it contains other useful ingredients, it is harder to absorb and metabolise than Calcium Citrate or Chelated Calcium. This is especially true if you have digestion or malabsorption problems because of an illness or from the effect of other medications on your stomach. Calcium Citrate has approx 70% absorption ratio as Hydroxyapatite is only approx 46%.

Both Calcium Citrate and Hydroxyapatite cause less constipation than other forms , although hydroxyapatite causes the least , but the absorption rate may not make this worth it. Although , often used to aid heartburn some people with issues with citric acid can have mild heartburn with Calcium Citrate but apparently the same can be possible on hydroxyapatite too.

I've never actually been offered or taken Calcium Hydroxyapatite and gave not needed to take calcium as yet , as my range is fine and I seem to be able to get enough Calcium from my diet.

Wish the same was true for just about all the other vitamins and minerals ! My body doesn't seem to like to absorb any of them without the supplemental help or injections,

Hope that helps , Bee

Your answer is very informative and helpful. Thank you! I have researched and taken different kinds of calcium supplements. The Hydroxyapatite was something new at the health food store. I read that Hydroxyapatite was an actual component of our bone composition, which impressed me. After reading about its lower absorbability in your reply, my decision is easy. I will no longer buy it. Thanks again, Bee. So thankful for this forum.

Yes , it's also used as a good dental and jaw filler , which made me keep researching it but I came to the conclusion that if I ever need Calcium from supplements that I would need the simplest form to absorb with the other digestion issues I have already.Always good to ask about others experience when it comes to supplements or herbal medicines just in case it could do more harm than good , just because these things are sold OTT doesn't always mean that they are going to right for us, take care , Bee
