Coping with extremes of temperature and pmr/gca

Hi, at 2mg of Pred I am taking things gradually and pacing myself, however I find the hot weather, ,particularly when combined with humidity has quite a negative effect. I guess this is because the body is having to manage to keep its temperature constant as well as deal with a chronic condition. Just wanted reassurance that I am not alone really.

You are not alone Animallover65. I am spending a lot of time in my room with the fan blowing listening to audiobooks, whilst my family sunbathes. I think it is a combination of the hot weather and struggling Adrenal function. I feel pretty wiped out currently - and left out. 🌺

Thank you Sheffield Jane, yes its those poor old adrenals isn't it. Its hard feeling unable to join in certain things. I have recently got into the habit of sitting in my leanto in the early mornings when its cool. having a cuppa and watching the birds eating and drinking in my small garden. I find watching nature is inspiring.

we have about 14 finches in my garden and I can see them at the feeders from my room. They are very busy nesting at the moment. Cheering along with blackbird song.

So lovely aren't they! I am amazed at how hard the parents work at feeding their babies. The robins seem tireless. I love the blackbirds song.

Having got down to 2mg Pred I was feeling pretty good until the hot weather arrived and am now totally weak, unable to function and rather cross. I long for it all to pass. Hot weather has always been a problem for our family - fair skin, red haired Scots. My son used to cope beautifully with winter temperatures of minus 30 degrees when he worked in Moscow but the summers were dreadful for him..

2 mgs of pred seems a bit of a challenging place to be. I think the weather forecasters suggest it will be cooler in the UK next week! Fingers crossed.

Me too, currently at 2/1.5 taper. Feeling drained and disinterested. Praying for rain!

Its horrible isn't it! It feels a little cooler in Herts at the moment. Bring on the rain!

We had massive thunder and lightening last night and some rain ( Yorkshire) fresher today but still sunny.

I live in the American South, and it's a real problem. In fact, we went so far as to get a 2nd home up north, in New England. Will be headed up there tomorrow. Should be much cooler.

Hope you enjoy some cooler weather in New England.

What was the temperature in the South?

winfong profile image
winfong in reply to Animalover65

It'll hit the 90s, with terrible humidity. Throw in a few 100s there as well. Today, there was a 30 degree difference between the two places!

Wow sounds like you are in the best place. I hope politicians prioritise climate change now.

Sure i read somewhere - found it: IL-6 is involved in body temperature at any rate in mice.

It is capable of crossing the blood–brain barrier[7] and initiating synthesis of PGE2 in the hypothalamus, thereby changing the body's temperature setpoint. In muscle and fatty tissue, IL-6 stimulates energy mobilization that leads to increased body temperature. At 4 degrees C, both the oxygen consumption and core temperature were lower in IL-6-/- compared with wild-type mice, suggesting a lower cold-induced thermogenesis in IL-6-/- mice.[8]

Meanwhile I'm winning, triumphing...I'm remembering to immediately put the milk back in the fridge!

Keep up the good work! I am attempting to clear the washing up quicker!

Oh that did make me so laugh because of this: my coffee tasted extremely weird. i realized I hadn't rinsed the jug I use to fill the kettle. Finest blend of washing-up liquid. Yeuutch!

it's raining - oh, it was, for about ten minutes (Sussex). Dwindling hopes of being kept awake by deafening thunderclaps and a torrential downpour. On the coast, where we're usually quite good at wild weather, but according to the forecast a few drops might fall on Tuesday.

Hi, how I identify with you! Returned from seeing my son& holidaying in Norway to “concrete” like garden which our kind neighbours had kept alive & rather alot of commitments. Very humid air. So by yesterday I was really struggling & I’m sure my adrenals were very under par. So was my golf 😩. We have had no rain in Cornwall for a month & the hosepipe ban has been in force since last summer! So watering cans it has to be. I love my garden dearly but enough is enough. A little light gardening this morning & a post lunch snooze. Then catching up with paperwork including preparing for a phone chat with the Endo (several months late) tomorrow. The great news is I have a letter from the Rheumy to say the 3 annual Zoledronic Acid infusions I have had seem to have worked their magic & I am now only mildly osteopenic! Hurray!

Thats great new about the adrenals! Do you think the golf also helped?

Great news about the bones, not so great re, the adrenals. The Endo has, yesterday, confirmed that I am never likely to be off a low dose of Prednisolone. Pretty disappointing, will just have to manage my life better 😬. I am sure golf, Pilates, Aqua aerobics all help with bone density but I guess the major factor has been the infusions & taking regular doses of AdCal. Oh & by the way it’s rained over night hurray!

Sorry, I meant great news about the bones! I have been on AA and Evacal for a year - so keeping fingers crossed for next Dexa . Going to add swimming to my repertoire, as started a ballet class recently - not quite like Dawn French's performance hopefully! Had thunderstorm in Herts this morning too!

It is great fun! .Its the Vale academy of performing arts. We are practising for a small part in a production at the Spotlight theatre in Broxbourne next year. The group I have joined are older women, some quite experienced and graceful . I have been told I am doing well- hopefully I wont be the fairy elephant!
