Has anyone had problems with teeth and jaw pain when on prednisolone? Is so what advice can you give.

My teeth have been no bother the last ten years. They are very old.

Then when pmf hit , possibly as long as 8 months or more ago,, began to have jaw pain and trouble chewing.

Started pred in November.

Visited dentist in April, x rays.

May wisdom tooth extracted.

Since then filling fallen out and great sensitivity in other teeth not previously experienced.

So much so cold food is a misery..

Cannot afford , finanxcially or otherwise ,to lose more teeth,

I have ample calcium foods cheese ,sardines, salmon , nut butter etc.milk, yoghurt

Also vit D and k.

What more can I do..?

All suggestions welcomed.

Thank you.

Teeth can be a real nuisance, can’t they? My dentist of many years recommends Oral-B Pronamel and using a soft toothbrush and flossing before brushing. Have you seen a dental hygienist?

Did you ever have the pain in jaw when chewing investigated? Do you still have that problem (ask a question and in return receive more question!).

Adding a bit of info on supplements:

balancedwellbeinghealthcare....

Just checking on those quantities!

I should probably delete all this and start again! Your doctor should prescribe Calcium + vitamin D3 tablets. Each tablet contains the correct amount of each.

Vitamin D and Vitamin K2.

Tha nk you 123-go,No I did not mention it before going to the dentist...

By Nov.

My friend eventually had to cut up my food on our weekly jaunts but hands could not hold fork...

Pain everywhere in body

Had pain in jaw down neck a d severe headaches... one side the jaw pain... so couldnt chew. No did not mention to Gp. I told the dentist in April who fortunately knew about pmr.

I just wondered if others onhere were sudden ly troubled by teeth...

And what they did...I guess I must be early the oldest on here but has if affected younger

Next appt is for hygienist and one more for smoothing off rough tooth.

I try all toothpastes... Will try the one you recommend.

Thank you again.

Ps yes been taking D3 with K for over ten years

and advised others to do so.

No - not that much older than many and I know at least 2 other 84 year olds and one heading for her 90th!

Thank you for the link to the other posts on teeth. So now I know... very helpful posts.

I am not very good at using this site so failed to find the info I needed.

Will try two of the toothpastes mentioned.

Yes probably more oldies on here

than i realised...,but maybe the90 Yr old has already been relieved of her natural teeth ?

I cannot afford to lose any more of mine or to have them extracted.

It was just another worry to add to the many.

I don't think she has! I also know a former PMR patient who recently celebrated her 99th birthday and still uses the internet a lot. Not sure about her tooth status though.

I would get checked out for GCA as Jaw Pain and headaches are classic symptoms. I am sure its not that but better to be sure and your dentist may not pick that up. Better to see your doctor and double check.

I hope you get some relief soon, Freya32.

Bless you... I do.And you too..

I need just a little longer to sort stuff..

Each day I seem able to do less.

Today I was taken to the sea... heaven

Had soft white crab and little salad for lunch and a lemon/ lavender posset....and all easy on teeth...and few carbs.

And a wide sea view.

The toothpaste arrived.. gc toothmousse.

Looks just like toothpaste.. just .tried it seems OK.

Didn't rinse off... as PMR PRO advised. Tastes OK.

Too pricey for me at £17 per 35 grams

Don't like some of the contents...titanium dioxide, xylitol or sodium saccharine...

It says mint...but I see neither menthol or peppermint listed.

But will continue with it and try all commended .

All advice much appreciated. I hadn't a clue which one would help.

Thank you.

You don't need much - most people use far too much toothpaste. Just a bit the size of a new pea is plenty

What a lovely day you've had! Keep the picture of that sea view in your mind and if/when you are having not too good a day imagine yourself back there. Below is a passage from a book I'm reading:

"In 1987 Doctor Francine Shapiro was walking in her local park when she noticed that the simple process of scanning the landscape ( seascape in your case) made her feel calmer and less anxious." This realisation led to her carrying out years of research which culminated in the development of a therapy involving eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing which helped sufferers of PTSD.

Good luck with the very expensive toothpaste 😳. Let us know how things go.

Using toothpaste for sensitive teeth often helps - DON'T rinse after brushing, Some denstists suggest rubbing toothpaste onto the surface of your teeth.

There has been a recent thread about sensitive teeth

I did have a problem a couple of years ago and my dentist gave me some special toothpaste (sorry, can't remember if it had a name)which completely solved the problem. I now use OralB sensitive which seems to work fine.

Many thanks. BcolAll suggestions welcomed,

I have sent for the G C mousse one , so will try that first though will use carefully at that price .

We are all unique so what suits one might not suit another.

It is a relief to know others experience this too while taking preds....so this sudden extreme sensitivity is not an age thing.

I used to have this problem then my dentist prescribed special toothpaste its called Colgate Duraphat 5000 ppm and it worked ...I don't have this problem anymore on my maintenance dose of 4 mg now my teeth are a bit sensitive but I control with just normal sensodyne toothpaste .,I had this problem especially when I was taking the Alendronic Acid and I really think it was the cause ..as now I'm below 5mg of prednisolone I don't need to take it anymore and it's gone altogether ...I hope you get sorted xx

Thank you pammy,I have added it to my list.

Very glad it has worked for you.

Keep well.

pammy_hyland profile image
pammy_hyland in reply toFreya32

Its only on prescription from your dentist you can't buy it yourself xx

Freya32 profile image
Freya32 in reply topammy_hyland

Thank you. PammyI will do that.

I did not have this problem before the tooth extraction.

He asked were my teeth sensitive. I said no.

The extraction was perfect , no pain afterwards ( took Arn ica )

All healed v quickly.

It seems that the other teeth were protesting at onslaught.

Sounds silly but who knows...

Thank you to all those kind folk who replied.

All so helpful as always.

Jaw pain is a symptom of GCA.

Freya32 profile image
Freya32 in reply toJanstr

Thank you Jan,Son said so too but it has gone, the headaches ha ve eased and jaw now works ok..and I am still here.

Sleeping all night now ...bliss...so all is relatively well

Had not had bad head since the migraines stopped about 30 yrs ago so it was unusual for me.

Asked to see rheumatologist....(never seen one for my arthritis) but Dr said waiting list very long.

Thank you.

Hello Freya , I am 81 yrs young and developed PMR some 12 years ago and have been on Prednisolone ever since, a maintenance dose of 5mg daily. Although I vist my dentist for 6 monthly check ups, over the last few months I have suffered from aching teeth when drinking hot or cold liquids, whether the Prednisolone is causing this I am unsure.

Thank you Alan,Good you are still young.

Our family are long livers.... one side...

Think mine is surely due the pred . It was there when dentist asked but not enough to moan about.

Now it is.

Preds or no I do not really know for sure...

Strange but they have eased all the arthritic pain in addition to pmr pain except for the hands but not the mouth pain.

I am staying on them as long as need be.

Keep well.

A chronic dry mouth can cause tooth decay. You didn't mention this as a symptom but thought I'd mention it.
