Hi, Just wondering if anyone has been successful in claiming Attendance Allowance for PMR. I know several people were trying I believe and just wondering how it went.Thanks.

During my working life I helped many people complete these forms, and also obtained the allowance for both my parents. My understanding is that you have to need help with essential activities of daily living (such as personal care, but also possibly essential transportation, for example). Certainly in the past, the criterion was that you needed help, not whether you actually received it.

Perhaps try ringing AgeUK or similar for advice. I would be very interested in the outcome. I think lots of us need help, but soldier on either not receiving it, or paying privately where possible. Go for it! ☘️xx

this is the eligibility…

“you have a physical disability (including sensory disability, for example blindness), a mental disability (including learning difficulties), or bothyour disability is severe enough for you to need help caring for yourself or someone to supervise you, for your own or someone else’s safetyyou have needed that help for at least 6 months”

I would be surprised if PMR alone (if treated properly & on right steroid dose) would mean that people would be eligible, really, judging by the posts I see each day. I think people suffering PMR plus maybe arthritis or a n other illness may be eligible. I need help to do a lot of things, but have 8 diagnosed diseases!! I wouldn’t apply for this myself, as I think there are others who need it much more & can’t cope, & I know the funding of it is difficult these days. I think if you are older (I am only 66) & live your your own you could push for it. I note it’s L for your own or someone else’s safety’ so if you are unsafe without supervision & have been so for six months you may get it.

I successfully obtained the lower rate of attendance allowance last year . I have polymyalgia and need help with certain things . It came through very quickly and it’s such a help . Good luck with your claim 🤞

Important to note that Attendance Allowance is not means tested, and is only available to people over pensionable age. If you are successful in obtaining it, other benefits may follow, such a reduction in council tax.

Good luck to anyone who applies. I think a lot of us here tread a fine line, eg my husband helps me hugely with cooking and driving, which allows me energy to do other things, but doesn’t directly help me manage my condition(s) 😊
