good morning everyone

I don’t know if anyone on here has had any experience with tooth whitening products, only I’ve seen an advert for a tooth whitening powder which I’m very tempted to try, especially as it’s dentist approved and is peroxide-free.

I’m just wondering about the Alendronic Acid I’m taking and whether it would be compatible.

I have messaged the company asking, but I just wondered if anyone has done anything like this.

The claims sound ok - but I think I would ask my own dentist. It doesn't have the real well-known baddies but I have no doubt it isn't difficult to find a dentist to pay to say they approve of it!

Don't think using a fancy toothpaste (which is really all it is) would interact with AA. This is for the enamel on the outside of teeth, different level. But you don't want anything that might mess up the enamel.

well, that’s a bit difficult as I’m in the midst of finding a new dentist now we’ve moved house.

It is actually a powder so I thought it may be gentler than toothpaste. I’ll look into it further me thinks🤔

toothpaste is just a powder with fluid of some sort! Do you not remember tooth powders? My grandfather used powder.

yes, I do remember very vividly. My old dad used to always use it: Gibbs dentifreeze it was called [don’t know if that’s spelt right]

His teeth were in a bad state but he had most of them (no falsies) right up until the day he died - at a few months short of 101 years.

That is amazing! My aunt was inordinately proud she had all her own teeth at 70 - my mother had all hers out at 21, I assume peridontal disease.

well my lovely old mum had hers out at the age of 19 of The same disease. That wouldn’t happen these days - thankfully.

I don't know - would depend on it being caught in time by regular dental checks. And they seem few and far between these days.

well we’re fortunate that we can readily get a dental appointment here when we want one. Mind you: they know how to charge!

My mother also had hers out at 21. Gum disease. Many years later her dentures had worn down and she went to see about replacements. The dentist told her to bring a photo of herself with her own teeth. She had two prominent front teeth. You can imagine what the new dentures looked like! She never wore them 🙂

oh, bless her.

Thank goodness we’ve significantly improved re dental provision in our lifetimes.

Definitely. I've just told the dentist today that when I was 17 the school dentist said that my back teeth weren't too clever and she offered to make me 'a nice denture'! I've still got all my teeth at 68, although the back ones are crumbling somewhat.

Nice escape. My rather unusual aunt went to the dentist as a young woman, and on a whim, had all her teeth out, so save future bother. Came home toothless, which must have given my uncle a fright. Can you imagine a dentist getting away with that now?

😬It doesn't bear thinking about does it? I think it was a lot more 'normal' then to have a full set of dentures. I know of someone else who had to have a couple of teeth out and told the dentist that he might as well deal with the rest at the same time.

On the plus side, when she took her dentures out, she was able to touch her nose with her chin, which impressed us greatly as children!

I find Sensodyne whitening tooth paste to be very good, alongside a regular scale and polish at my dentist.

Doraflora in reply to SheffieldJane

yes, I’ve tried sensodyne SheffieldJane and am onto the Arm & hammer range now.

I was just attracted by the makeover aspect of it.

I’ve had it done in the past, but had it done professionally and it was dear! Didnt think it was worth the money!

I have been using for quite a while the Oral B range of toothpastes and find them very good and give a pleasing result. They do a Whitening Restore toothpaste which is expensive at £16 … but worth it. It’s often at £8 at Tesco or Boots … so I keep a watch out for that! Good Luck with it!

Doraflora profile image
Doraflora in reply to autumnlass

oh, thanks for that, autumnlass, I’ll search that one out. It’d be cheaper than the powder at £24.99!

Hello - I’ve used Oral B stuff for a long while. I find them really good. The only expensive one is their Whitening Restore at £16 .. but as I mentioned if you box clever you can find it at £8. It lasts ages too! My teeth are white too! Not that awful white white but pretty natural I think. 😊

I've been to the dentist's today and she wanted to make sure that I was still using the Oral B Pro-expert that she recommended years ago. It feels as if it's cleaning your teeth doesn't it?!

I really like Oral B toothbrushes and their whole range of products, and yes I feel that it really cleans and cares for your teeth.

I was told by my dentist that tooth whitening (with trays/bleaching agent) should be avoided when on steroids anyway. I find a regular whitening toothpaste works pretty well for non-serious staining. A visit to the hygenist helps every so often and there's no issue with having that done.

Absolutely. That’s what I do! 💐

It’s interesting you mentioned teeth whitening Doraflora as I use a product a couple of times a month and have noticed that its making no difference to my teeth. I have a teeth moulds and use a low dose product and I would normally expect a brighter, whiter smile but there appears to be very little difference. I’m not sure if this helps you but I feel I should investigate further so thank you for brining this to our attention.

hi BigEric. Have you seen Orange_2022’s comment above re not using any bleach based products while on steroids?

Think I’ll give the Oral B recommendations first & see how that goes for me.

Hope your pain is settling down now?
