Covid antivirals going to waste as patients struggle to access drugs

COVID ANTIVIRALS
Another "Leading the world ..." Our GPs are allowed to prescribe them.
I just despair. Someone was talking on the radio this morning saying the GP system is broken beyond repair!
We didn't get the paxlovid for hubby, although in the end he had no need for it, but my son's partner's parents have both got covid now, and her father in particular is at risk (they both are, both diabetic, but he's worse and has heart condition as well), and their daughter phoned all their doctors, not relying on public health response, and one of them was able to start the protocol so her dad is getting not just paxlovid but some other treatment in the hospital, she didn't know what it was called, an injection I think. So here at any rate they must have loosened the rules in the last few days so physicians now have some say about which patients are most at risk, not relying only on a person filling in an online form and talking to a nurse over the phone.
I was offered them the day after my positive result but didn't feel bad enough at the time so declined.
I did get a text immediately though and the phone call the next morning so I was quite impressed with that at least.
I had the same response as you. and my anti virals were taxied down to me from 30 miles away , I admit I was delighted to receive them but, at the same time was relieved I did not have to pay that taxifare .
Although my husband didn't get approved for paxlovid, he was sent an oximeter, and received very good advice. I phoned our 811 line (nurse consultation) and was advised to take myself off to the testing centre for a PCR test, she even made the appointment for me, and answered my questions about best way to protect myself. She said I was much more aware than most people she talked to! So I have to say we did get good information and support. Hubby is doing well. People in our circle who are at more risk than we are have received paxlovid.
I tested positive for covid last Thursday and Friday my GP, rheumatologist and pharmacist had multiple discussions about drug interactions with the antiviral finally delivering paxlovid antiviral medication that afternoon. I was instructed to stop taking amlodopine and lipitor and lefludomide. My rheumatologist explained that they have no research with lefludomide and its interaction with paxlovid so that was precautionary. I was not feeling too bad but my rheumatologist said it is about preventing not curing! I am in New Zealand.
