5th Covid vaccine

I know this topic has been covered recently but I’m still confused about the 5th Covid vaccine. I’ve just rang 119 and spoken to a guy who has said they are not inviting anyone for a 5th vaccine. They are currently working on people eligible for the spring booster as set out in the NHS guidelines. For any of you who have been called for a 5th where did the invite come from? The 119 guy says that it must have come from a GP or care provider. I have PMR, was shielding, have had a 4th booster dose last January, I’ve had the letter re anti virals and a personalised PCR test, and my first free lateral flow test. I’m under 75 does this make a difference? Can anyone clarify please.

Thanks.

Hi Tiggy70

I'm 64 and like yourself, I've had four vaccinations in total so far.

I went onto the NHS website and booked my 5th vaccination there.

They will have info on their system that lists your previous vaccinations and the system should recognise that you're eligible for a fifth.

I found it very easy and straightforward.

Hi Kendrew, thanks for your reply. When did you have your 4th vaccine. Was it three months ago? Mine was on the 17th January so it’s not quite three months yet. I’m away for a couple of weeks so I’ll try booking through the NHS website when in return home. Thanks Tiggy.

My 4th vaccination was at the end of Jan and the 5th is middle of May. So yes....at least 3mths between vaccinations.

Can I ask how you know you can get your 5th after 3 months? I was told 6 months, so am confused

Hi Bailybiscuit,

It advises it on the NHS website.

Information about spring booster

Thank you, except why are they allowing people to book after 3 months when it says to wait until about 6 months after the previous one I wonder?

I don't think you necessarily have to wait 6mths. I think it's because it could be up to 6mths between your previous vaccination and being given your next booster appointment depending on the area you live in and the demand there, but you can have the vaccination from 3mths onwards after previous one (if you can book the appointment as I have been able to) but no sooner. Six months seems to be the average time.

Where does it say you have to wait 6mths?

You are correct - It doesn’t say you have to wait 6months -it just suggests you may get a better response if you wait longer than the 91days which is the minimum time…People aren’t reading it properly….😉

On this on the Government's web site, but I also found the same as you have shown. I think it is misleading as if it is best to be 6 months why allow 3 months?

I received a text message from my excellent and clued up GP to book the 5th vaccine.

You’re so lucky to have an excellent GP. When I spoke to my GP practice they said we don’t deal with vaccinations you need to ring 119!

Coffeebeans in reply to Tiggy70

Ah. I see the issue. How did you manage to get the 4th one? Perhaps that's the route to try?

Tiggy70 profile image
Tiggy70 in reply to Coffeebeans

I booked it by ringing 119. That didn’t work today though. The guy I spoke to appeared to know nothing about 5th vaccines.

It shouldn't be that hard should it.

Tiggy70 profile image
Tiggy70 in reply to Coffeebeans

No it shouldn’t be that hard. In his defense he did say for me to ring back in a few days as things are constantly changing.

Except they have already changed in many places - why not for them/you?

I’m going to park this issue for a couple of weeks. I fly to the US tomorrow to stay with my son and his family. A long awaited trip postponed last Christmas because of Covid. I haven’t seen my granddaughter for two and a half years. I’ve just done my required lateral flow test (negative) so I’m fit to fly. FFP3 masks at the ready!

I'm trying to summon up the courage and enthusiasm to negotiate the joys of travel! Planes, boats and trains in the UK seem to be far from ideal at present! I want my car for UK travel so flying doesn't really appeal but queuing to come back home here doesn't either!

Over 2 and half years for me too - except the daughters being here when OH died.

We made the decision to go now as who knows what Covid might throw at us in the coming months. I’m not in good shape with PMR and I have a full thickness rotator cuff tear to contend with as well and may need surgery. According to my son who lives in PA you would think Covid no longer exists in the States. Personally I will be taking the same precautions as I have done since the start of the pandemic with my mask wearing, social distancing etc. I can’t say that I’m not a bit nervous though.

I get the impression as far as some are concerned, it doesn't exist in the UK either! I think the thing that unsettles me most is what I would do if I DID catch it while over! Both daughters have very small, fully occupied, flats meaning a"put-u-up" approach to guests. And while visiting one's family and friends it isn't a good look to go down with Covid and have to saddle yourselves on them is it!! The cousins caught it here while skiing - their upmarket hotel had insisted on guests taking out their in-house insurance which resulted in the week's isolation being with full room service covered by insurance in their 4* hotel! They then came to me while still positive but after 2 weeks I'm pretty sure I did escape despite driving them over to Innsbruck to the rearranged flight home.

I've got one like that as well. They "don't do" 4th vaccinations. Great isn't it??

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to borednow

REALLY??? Which training course/briefing did they sleep through?

Though here on the forum lots of people have referred to 4th or 5th boosters - if that crops up in a conversation it will confuse them as they are 1st and 2nd boosters if you were immunosuppressed and got a 3-jab primary course.

Rang my GP earlier this morning enquiring about 4th vaccine. Told by Receptionist that they're not doing them at the moment and when they do it will be the housebound and care homes first, followed by others. Couldn't give any indication as to when this was likely to commence. So I went online on the NHS site and both myself and my neighbour (both over 75) have appointments booked tomorrow afternoon at what used to be a cottage hospital in the next village. Our local surgery is rapidly becoming obsolete.

I too have had a 5th vaccination last week, my 4th was on the 18th December and understand that you have to wait 3 months between doses. My advice is to go straight to the NHS website after 3 months and try to book. 119 is very variable in it’s advice. G.P. seem confused and advise getting a letter from the consultant, I don’t even know if that is possible and what do you do with it?

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Sallyaches

Some people have been to walk-in centres with their letter and been successful - are walk-ins still a "thing"? (I don't live in the UK and we aren't past 3rd jabs really yet!)

Tiggy70 profile image
Tiggy70 in reply to PMRpro

I’m not sure which ones are still open. So far I’ve had my vaccinations at three different centres.

Yes they are operating here in Norfolk, one in main city hall, one in local hospital. Had mine there last week, but had a small battle at first. Had 3 texts from GP t to tell me to get 4th vaccine, had 2 NHS letters as well. Car park attendant asked if I had an appointment, I pointed out it's a walk in centre!....he said only if you have an appointment....to which I replied, I'll let them decide that....no problems when I went inside........but I did politely wave at him when I left, although I felt like doing something else!...

I rang Dr's surgery after being informed by needle nurse that my fourth jab would be toward end of March. They told me they had no vaccine, no dates for any clinics. They also told me they had no computer page to book people in on. When l asked am l being forgotten, she replied no, l am not alone. We just have no vaccine. I was then told to try and book in at a walk in centre at the town. I replied you told me you were coming out to visit me. Another internal phone call, then told try the walk in . I get the distinct impression surgery do not want to do this fourth round. Trying to book fourth at drop in today which is in same town.
