Shocked at the colour of my teeth

Been on pred for 3 and a half years now. This weekend my OH said to me, "have you lost a tooth?". He said he couldn't see my molar tooth when I laughed. When I looked in the mirror all of my molars and pre molars seem to have blackened. I recently had a dental check-up and the dentist never mentioned it. Can anyone advise please. I expect it's the dreaded pred. Will the dentist be able to clean the black off when I go for a long overdue scale and polish? Gutted. Got to 73 with all my teeth.

Don’t know what’s happened with you but I’ve been on pred for just short of 4 years now and that’s not happened to me. As it happens I was at the dentist this morning for a check up and he said everything was looking good, even my rather elderly implant. He even took photos of my back teeth and showed me them on the screen. They weren’t black! Are you sure it’s the pred and not something else? Have you been having regular hygienist appointments? If not could it just be that?

I've been on pred for over 12 years and my teeth haven't really changed colour that I have noticed although they are quite dark - but the technician didn't have any trouble matching the ceramic inlays.

It is usually staining - but you do need to see a dentist as they recommend in the article.

Hi there 😊

I’ve been on pred for just a year now and my teeth don’t seem to have darkened.

However, when I was on a course of several months’ IV antibiotics for something else entirely a few years ago, I had exactly your experience. My teeth (at the front in my case) turned black 😳 No one seemed to know why- but a couple of scale and polish sessions got them back to normal. I hope it’s the same for you xx

Do you use Chlorhexidine mouthwash? That can stain.

No, just corsodyl toothpaste and electric brush.

I believe that corsodyl toothpaste can darken teeth especially if you drink tea or coffee shortly after, Google it. I remember some years ago my husband using it and we read about the staining issue. I am sure it’s reversible but your dentist will advise, and your deep clean will hopefully sort it. Good luck.

Yes, Abbey's right; the dentist warned my husband it would stain his teeth. Hope that's all it is!

Corsodyl does stain teeth. It says so on the mouthwash, and I imagine the toothpaste does too. A scale and polish is the only way to get rid of it.

Do you drink a lot of coffee or tea? Our teeth do change colour as we get older - recently l bought some old fashioned Eucryl Tooth Powder for Stained Teeth - you can only use it twice a week!

My son was using the Cordosyl mouthwash and when he came home for a visit I was shocked to see his black teeth. A ten minute visit to the dentist and he appeared with a dazzling smile. Seemingly Cordosyl does that , but it’s easily remedied. I hope this reassures you .

My teeth have discoloured. Used to be nice and white. Now are a greyish yellow. Dentist not concerned. I notice it in photos with my friends 😢

Just in case no-one has seen it - Corsodyl shouldn't be used for more than 2 weeks at a time.

It is antibacterial - and that means it kills all sorts of bacteria, the Good Guys as well as the Bad Boys! A healthy oral bacterial flora is essential for a healthy mouth.

Thank you everyone for your comments. I'll bin the corsodyl. I used Oral B previously, I'll go back to that.
