If anyone is in any doubt if Keto works alongside our blood sugar issues, I’ve been on Keto for just under 4 weeks now and have lost 1 stone and 3 lb. By back pain has disappeared as has my left knee pain. My bowel issues have disappeared. I’ve stopped going to the loo more than 5 or 6 times a day. My head feels a bit clearer and my energy levels are good (not “normal”but good). Just sayin.

Keto isn’t for me but I do low carb high fat and have lost over 3 stones in weight. It has put my type 2 into remission.

Well done you.

My brother is type 2 and his health and weight are a concern. I wish I could get him to just give it a go. He has a choc ice and chips mentality to food. High in processed sugar and everything with breadcrumbs or pastry. I've made him keto pizza and he loved it.

Well done Singr 👏👏

I’m afraid Keto doesn’t suit me but I do find that low carb and high protein helps me at least not to gain weight….x

Now that there is good keto bread and rolls that has been a game changer.

Koalajane in reply to Singr

Not sure where you are from but wondered where you get your keto bread and rolls from. I have seen some online but the postage adds a lot to the price. I have made some of my own with almond flour

Is almond flour low carb ? I didn’t realise that….. have a coeliac daughter so almond flour might suit us both 🤞

Yes it is very low carb

Makes AMAZING brownies - gluten-free.

Oh, thank you pro, excellent - we all love brownies 😋

PMRpro profile image

Though I'm not sure brownies of any sort, even with almond flour, are low carb in the end result ;)

I first met them at a cafe in the middle of Leeds - they had an amazing selection of gluten-free products.

No, I’m sure you’re right about brownies - but we all need a treat now and then 😋x

You may send me one - and I'll cut it into 4 (or more) and freeze it for later ;)

Great idea 😄 I always have a couple of brownies in the freezer - for emergencies, of course 😉 and you’re welcome to share them x

I did order some very low carb choc chip biscuits and they tasted great. Can't remember who I ordered them from, ha!

Oh and there were carrot cake muffins which were sooo gingery and cinnimonny that heated up in microwave and then doused with cream (allowed on keto). It was all low carb and sublime. Sweet tooth sorted. I might try and upload a photo.

Nextoneplease in reply to Singr

I made a great GF carrot cake (kind of a tray bake to cut into squares) last year in lockdown - it was delicious though I say it myself 😋 Not exactly low carb but at least some of the sweetness was provided by carrots…..😉

Might try it with almond flour now x

Singr profile image
Singr in reply to Nextoneplease

I'm no expert but almond flour I think is free from gluten or starch. This might be what has been upsetting my stomach but I had the celiac test done by GP and it did not show up. I had an independent assessment. Told that the GP only does one element of the condition and misses out on other indicators.

Nextoneplease profile image
Nextoneplease in reply to Singr

It took my daughter at least six months to be diagnosed at the age of around 34 - GP tested her for IBS etc and she too had to get a private referral which showed coeliac disease. She’s been positively glowing since she cut out the gluten 😊- it was making her really ill…

Seriously low carb. Can buy on amazon. Not cheap but as I am the only one eating it , it lasts me in the freezer. Also I have Amazon prime and get free postage.

seriouslylowcarb.com/ . I can't remember if the not cross buns are done here. dare say you could google them.

Does the seriously low carb bread from Amazon taste like normal bread? It looks okay nutritiously

If you like brown or granary bread yes. My brother didn't even realise he was eating a low carb roll. (Hee hee!)

Excellent - I have decided, it is time to put the last 3 months behind me! No more lazy eating, no more icecream in the freezer, and all the xmas goodies have gone now.

I just got out of my routine during the last weeks before OH died - 2 weeks of daughters here, one vegan and one wanting to eat her favourite local food. meant there were 3 meals on the go if I ate "properly" and it was all rather chaotic anyway. And then on my own I've just been eating what took the least effort. Plus my two favourite xmas cakes, Zelten which is like a particularly superb fruit cake and Stollen, as gifts from a neighbour. Must have eaten a ton of cheese with them though!! But the habit of everything being very seasonal here will help - except it is Krapfen (doughnut) season for Carnival ... Once this snow gives up salad will look much more attractive - still eating it, I do actually crave it after a day or two! HeronNS said the same once - she'd never thought it would happen!

Thank you I needed that timely reminder, been out of control this week for some reason. Today Ive had 2 hot cross buns and a huge portion of French Stick with lots of butter and cheese and a packet of cheese biscuits. Needless to say I feel awful (deservedly). Tomorrow....

They now have not cross buns which are the keto version and ultra low carb seeded bread. Fab,

I need to know where you get these... that is one thing I can't make. They all taste disgusting like eating a bread omelette with undercooked psyllium.... I make Mary Berry's Nordic Seed Loaf and it's tolerable if a tad sweet.

That's great you're getting such good results from keto. Well done!

Dietdoctor.com has plenty of similar success stories too, so there's definitely something going for it!

I also use the Keto diet, primarily for controlling my blood sugar (which for me is super sensitive to pred), and have lost 18kg slowly over 18 months. One of the things I love about it is the virtual elimination of carb and sugar cravings. Although I do treat myself to the occasional bit of sugar-free chocolate! 😈

Unfortunately it's not quite all joy for me though as I don't seem to have had the other benefits so much. Plus it's involved eating meat again (after 40 years vegetarian!), which I do not enjoy for a whole host of reasons. 😳

I've tried vegetarian keto, but sadly it doesn't work to control my blood sugar nearly as well as the meat-based version. It definitely works well for some people though I believe and is something I'm looking forward to revisiting again once my pred dose gets lower or non-existent.

Good luck with staying on Keto, and I hope you continue to feel great on it!

Well done! I do low carb and full fat but I do let myself have a few treats. Unfortunately I think too often! 😂

Anyone interested in keto diet might be interested in looking at “public health collaboration “ website. It is based on a gp who treated lots of diabetic type 2 people with diet and they reversed their type 2 diabetes. It’s very interesting - I think.

That shows my usual sort of diet - I've really lapsed since October. Must try harder ...

Can’t say that it’s fun but I’ve been on keto without cheating for10 months. I lost 40 pounds and have 14 more to lose. Unfortunately, I still am sick, but at least I’m not feeling fat anymore. 😂

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Ciar

Isn't it strange - I really enjoy the low carb diet and as a bonus I find it so easy to prepare - salad or roast veggies is next to no preparation and I either lay a piece of meat or fish alongside or on top of the veggies or do it in a small pan for a minute or two each side.

Haven't seen a low carb approach to the tray bake/roast recipe books - but the concept is really easy to use.

great result. well done singr. Like pmrpro I've lapsed recently. a stone overweight so must try harder. I cook for both quite a lot so I compromise so we can both enjoy our meals. Only solution is to eat smaller portions as I am not able to expend the same level of energy I did before PMR and GCA. must try harder. Keto wouldn't work for both of us.

Nextoneplease profile image
Nextoneplease in reply to cycli

Good point cycli 😊

My OH loves carbs too which makes sticking to a low carb diet much more difficult for me……so I at least cut down portion sizes, if stuck.

Plus, the grandchildren need all the energy food they can get…..but I still sneak things like carrots into the cakes, and celery and peppers into ragu or meat sauce.

You can also get keto and low carb bread mixes which might work out cheaper. That is my next project.

Seacat30 profile image
Seacat30 in reply to Singr

Do they work in a bread machine?

Singr profile image
Singr in reply to Seacat30

Now that I don't know. I dare say if you contact the seller or look at the instructions on the back of the packet you could find out. I've never made a loaf before so it's all new to me.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to Seacat30

Depends what they use to keep the structure as it rises. Low gluten mixes don't always work unless there is a special programme for them

Good for you. I’m glad you’ve found something that works for you. I know a few people who have had success with keto.

I’ve been following low carb/sugar/salt eating plan for 3 years now and lost/kept off 25 pounds. Kind of a revised Mediterranean diet (without carbs/sugar). Over the holidays I ate what I wanted. This combined with our community pool closure meant I had to get back on track.

My daughter is a culinary nutritionist and helped me with suggestions, sample meal plans and moral support. She helped create something I could follow long term with her experience working at an alternative grains bakery and cafes with specialized menus.

I tried Keto and found it a challenge to stay in ketosis and follow an elimination diet with such low carbs. Also, my cholesterol has been creeping up so I just can’t consume all the fat required.

Losing weight for health reasons, as opposed to trying to fit into an outfit (for looks), feels completely different to me. The former is a lifestyle adopted over the long term. The latter seems like a faster, but temporary, process.
