New knee problem

I had the results of my recent X-ray this week and have been told I now have osteoarthritis in hip and pelvis as well as my spine. I also have osteoporosis from taking steroids for GCA, a follow up Dexa scan was done at Hospital this week. This morning I was just brushing my hair and when I turned my left knee seemed to move out causing pain and I was unable to move. I came over very hot and thought I was going to faint and felt very sick. When I did straighten my leg the knee seemed to go back to normal though I felt unwell for about 15 minutes and sat down. It feels normal now, no pain or swelling. Never had anything like this before and Im worried about this happening again causing a fall as Ive already had 3 spine fractures, any ideas please?

Where in relation to your knee? How strange - especially if you have no pain or swelling now. I take the knee is stable? Not waggly?

Really strange as I haven't had any pain or symptoms before. It was right in the middle of my left knee and daft as it may sound it felt like it bent and didn't go back. As I said no pain, swelling, heat or anything now and it feels stable. I do think because Im still walking like a penguin that I may have turned awkward rather than moving my feet.

That's a bit frightening...

stupid question maybe, but do you use a walking stick? You may already, but if you don't please buy one, and you need to make deliberate movements with feet, i.e. lift them up, don't swivel on them, that will put pressure on knee - and hip.

For next few days maybe put a support around offending knee, that will make it feel a bit more secure... and get it checked by GP (assuming you can get to see one)

Yes I use a stick and mostly a walker with a tray on the front to carry things, I bought both when I had the first spine fracture. You are right about not making deliberate movements with the feet though I did swivel this morning and the last spine fracture happened when I turned from opening the bedroom window to straighten the duvet. I have a chest x ray booked this week perhaps I can persuade my GP to get the knee x-rayed at the same time. The Hospital already say I have so much imaging done I am a member of Tate Gallery 😀

I thought you probably would, but had to ask 😊.

I did go through a phase of forever being in the imaging Dept..but not since last replacement op thankfully. Feels like you need a season ticket sometimes.,

Would be sensible to get hip checked as you are there this week, if the system can cope with that of course..

Please let us know outcome …

Thank you, I had hip x-rayed last week and have osteoarthritis there and the pelvis. I will let you know what transpires in case it helps anyone else. Really lucky as I have been treated very very well by Rheumatology and the Hospital, was given an immediate x-ray.

No, Im in Somerset and treated by RUH Bath. It is a new building there purpose built to replace the Old Mineral Hospital in the town. Highly recommended, first class care and treatment with everything on hand. I was diagnosed with GCA when I went to Ambulatory Care there by a Rheumy Consultant who recognised what was wrong with me within a couple of minutes. Since September I now need help with Osteoporosis and osteoarthritis and they have come up trumps for me with that too. No problems with face to face appointments, physio, imaging or call backs. Im about to be referred to the Osteoporosis Clinic and a Consultant. Very lucky.

Just a few thoughts on your knee behaviour: I have one knee revision replacement and a knee in need of replacement. I am also hyper mobile and have experienced very similar episodes as you describe when my knee moves into a strange position when moving from sitting positions. It is horrifically painful and sweat-inducing! It eventually goes back into position but mobilising can be difficult for several days until the pain chooses to go away. Physios and Consultants just point to the fact that the knee and surrounding tissue is so complex ...... bla bla... they don't really know. I bought an expensive desk chair for sitting for longer periods and this has really helped my problem. Also if I sit with my elbows/arms resting on my thighs it can happen. It seems to be a soft tissue issue but nonetheless painful. No swelling.I also wonder if my knee problems feed my PMR pain: it takes its ammunition from all sorts of weird places I think!

You have my sympathy. (Love your name by the way).

Thanks everyone. Went to GP this morning and she says the Patella (kneecap) came out of its groove and by straightening my leg I managed to get it to go back. Thinks probably due to weak muscles as I have been fairly immobile for a couple of months due to spine fractures. Pointed in the direction of Versus Arthritis for knee exercises and having an x-ray on Wednesday morning just in case. Interestingly she has experienced the same thing and said how painful and dramatic it was.

Hope the exercises help…

Thank you, so do I. Honestly think somebody recently crept in during the night and stole my body and replaced it with one of an old woman 😀

Oh yeah! Sounds like the same 'somebody' who crept into my home. Stole my body and replaced it with some ancient relic....

My daughter would have it to - however, has it happened to you before? If so, I would be expecting an experienced physio to sort the exercises not a DIY effort online and while she might have a lot of faith in the exercises, they don't always work so you do need some expert input.

No, never experienced anything like it before and hopefully won't again. Once the x-ray results are in I will contact my Physio but when the Rheumy was concerned about my blood pressure and heart rate last week she said to delay any Physio at the Hospital until it was under control. GP added Losartan to my Indapamide yesterday, still waiting for echo. Glad to say knee does feel more stable today. Hope your daughter is ok now.

She ended up having surgery - I put my foot down when the patella popped out while I was visiting and took her to James Cook hospital where we saw a German guy who said the physio word. I pointed out that 2 years of that had achieved not a lot. Ah, he said, referral to The Knee Guy. We attended and it was a physio for the first appointment - TKG's personal physio, as much a knee specialist as him. x-ray and then MRI because of the result; Even I could see the patella was about quarter to half an inch out of its proper place. All the physio in the world wouldn't have done any good!

HappyDiamonds profile image
HappyDiamonds in reply toPMRpro

Perhaps I shouldn't say this but I don't have an awful lot of faith in Physio its never helped me for anything in the past. Maybe different now with these new problems will have to wait and see. Mothers always know best 😀

She just took one look at the scans - she was brilliant. But I suspect no-one had x-rayed before. The op was hard work - but her knee doesn't pop out for no good reason now. It must have been a bit worrying when she had patients to carry downstairs - I wouldn't have wanted to be on the chair!!!

Hi HD

A long time ago - when l was 6years old l had a knee cap that used to slip out of place & then return - it’s a Subluxation rather than a dislocation.

The pain was excruciating 😱 to say the least - this problem remained with me all through my childhood until eventually l couldn’t put any weight on it at all or walk.

I saw a great Orthopod & l was his prize patient, he used to show me off to all his Juniors. He tried several treatments including a Back Splint & a Robert Jones Bandage (strangely that is the hospital l attend now) but eventually l had to have Surgery to stabilise the main ligament which was the culprit.

Less than six months went by Post Surgery when the other knee subluxated 😵‍💫 luckily for me when l was in A&E - MrW walked past - so he had me admitted there & then followed by an operation a couple of days later……

I have a lovely pair of matching scars & no real issues (apart from being unable to kneel) until the Chemo damaged the back of kneecaps.

You really need to support the knee & have it reviewed to see if you’ve done any damage. It could probably do with a knee support with a crescent shaped support in it, a figure of eight crepe bandage or splinting but ideally it’s a trip to A&E rather than trying to get to see your GP as it maybe very unstable……

Good Luck 🍀

Let us know how it goes.

Welcome back, I hope you had a lovely time. Thank you for sharing your experience, it certainly was painful and I honestly thought at the time that I was going to end up in Hospital. Have x-ray tomorrow, fortunately (or not) I had a chest x-ray booked and they readily agreed to do the knee at the same time. For now Im fearful of another spine fracture or the knee popping out again but life has to be lived and I can't wrap myself in cotton wool or bubble wrap.

It’s tough isn’t it but you could try a knee support to give you some reassurance 🤞🏻 Make your movements deliberate & don’t turn suddenly.

One of my boys is hyper mobile & his knees move suddenly, then pop back but it’s not a full subluxation. Lucky your GP has experienced it so she fully understands.

Take Care & Take it Ready
