Blood-shot eye

Has anyone experienced a sudden bloodshot eye? This happened yesterday with a little discomfort at first. I was driving home after a bowls match where I had bent down to pick up bowls several times. The only change in medication is that I have started taking vitamin K2 100mcg mk7. I also take Adcal (usually 1 per day now) and Lercandipine for blood pressure and Lipidor 20mg). Just tapered from 2 1/2 to 2mg pred. using the dead slow method (thanks to this wonderful site).

Look to the right of your screen. This has been discussed a few times on here ( someone sent a photo even) I think it is linked to our condition but I cannot remember why but it isn’t a cause for worry alarming as it looks.

Thanks Sheffield Jane, I am reassured!

Subconjunctival haemorrhage - looks far worse than it is!

Possibly due to pred making the tiny blood vessels in the eye a bit more delicate but you get them without being on pred and I'd never had one until this summer despite being on pred for 12+ years (and have had PMR even longer).

Hide behind the sunglasses! It'll fade away just like any other bruise.

Thanks PMRPro, that’s reassuring. I learn a lot from all your answers!

It happened to me just before Halloween. It nearly covered all the white and looked really impressive. Real vampire stuff. It started to fade after a few days and did not look half so good!

Thyssen must have been impressed! 😀

Don’t talk about Thyssen he has just thrown up all along the path by my house. Too much Christmas cheer probably.

I get them relatively often. Sometimes sore - they go. Sometimes a bit of dust/grit you don't even notice can set them off.

Yes. Way to clear it up faster is to use artificial tears, advice from my ophthalmologist.

Thanks for all your replies. It’s beginning to look better after 24 hours and I’m feeling better - Probably because I’ve stopped worrying about it!

Yep, had a few of these ghoulish eyeball events myself. Doc said not to worry, it resolved itself in a couple of days...too bad we missed Halloween!

Same for me too. Came on suddenly in morning and dispersed and gone by bedtime. Looks scary but seems quite common on pred.

Is it from having dry eyes? My optician says is a PMR thing and recommends eye drops without preservative like Thealoz Duo - I find these help

It isn't really a PMR thing - more a pred thing. But my husband had loads, never took pred, didn't have PMR. Me - one in my whole life.

I had them before PMR and pred too - eye drops are good

Hello,

My sister has had red eyes and says it's due to dry eyes. This can be caused by central heating, going out in the wind etc. She uses Hycosan Extra drops to clear them. I used them once and they worked. Sometimes it needs a few applications. Hope this helps. Unlike me, my sister doesn't have polymyalgia.

Please note PMRpro's comment, as subconjunctival haemorrhage can also be helped by eye drops.

They look quite different from subconjuctival haemorrhage though.

in reply toPMRpro

In that case, Hycosan may be of use.

I used to get it, in my non GCA affected eye which was worrying, if I washed my face in water that was extra hot. I used to do that as a facial skin treatment of hot then cold water, but now just use warm water. Dr said as I'm on low dose aspirin, a blood thinner, that made me more susceptible to such events.

I had them before I ever took Prednisolone. They look really scary. A GP friend of mine said they can occur as a result of sneezing or any sudden raising of blood pressure. Nothing to worry about- apart from your good looks!
