Any tips on helping trochanteric bursitis?I have suffered with it since twisting my hip getting off a bike that had a really high crossbar- X-rays just show osteopenia-thought it was a lot better and did a bike ride and now it’s so bad can’t walk v far- is it better to take brufen than up my steroids again as am fairly stable PMR wise on 2.5 mg pred thanks for any help

Maybe have a look at the related posts, it’s discussed frequently - PMRpro has good knowledge and advice on subject.

Not sure unfortnately that cycling is the thing to be doing, though i totally understand you wanting to get back to it. I had a steroid injection for very bad hip pain, which actually settled it, not gone for good though, things/certain exercise will aggravate it and it will be very sore. I got a small cycle exerciser to try help my knee used very, very lightly for few minutes and the hip did not respond well at all. I hope it settles for you it can be very painful.

Icing and rest - and probably brufen is what you can do. If it is really bad (and not clearing up with not cycling or doing stairs) you may need a steroid jab. I've just had a course of extracorporeal shock wave therapy on my right hip and it does seem to have improved things a lot but I don't imagine that is an option in the UK!! Apparently the rehab dept here has had superb results with it over the last 4 years.

I have had really good results with steroid shots in the past.

I thought it wasn't in the earthquake region??

L'Aquila was very badly damaged in one in 2009, that's about 40 miles away I think. The entire mountainous backbone of Italy from Umbria/Le Marche down to Calabria is high risk.

We (Washington State, Pacific Northwest, USA) live in earthquake country...and volcanos all around us..do not fear, they rarely happen, ...and life's too short to hide from shadows.

Just sayin...

Depends - central Italy does get a lot and few houses were built earthquake-proof! Those that were supposed to be often aren't either - the mafia is alive and well ...

thanks for the heads up- the house am viewing is a fairly new one so hopefully built to survive!!

Sorry to hear of your injury. For me the answer is always ICE, ICE and more ICE. That really helps relieve the inflammation and pain .Good Luck

I had this after doing Curves twice a week. Too many repetetive exercises but great fun! Very painful to walk especially upstairs. Had nhs physio and acupuncture. Took 12 weeks, lots of resting and icing and paracetamol plus a cortizone injection before it abated. 3 years before I could sleep on that side. Just requires patience. Lots of people are better after 6 weeks. Fingers crossed.

I have every sympathy with you . I can relate to your condition so well .

I have had two steroid injection into my left hip due to trochanteric bursitis - the first one worked brilliantly but after having physio due to torn hamstrings in my right leg (!) left hip flared again within weeks . Consultant gave me another steroid injection - not quite as successful but did ease pain . I was sent to the Pain Mangement Clinic last month and the Consultant prescribed me Naproxen - it has worked brilliantly and now I just suffer slight discomfort but am very careful as to when I take it in relation to the pred. Initially he said to take 2 x 500mgs tabs for three days then reduce to one each day- now I take one every other day.

I gave up riding my electric bike after sustaining a stress fracture in my fibula due to the severe arthritis in right ankle - I am due to have a steroid injection in my ankle later today and am hoping this helps . I have got to get my daily steroid intake down to 7.5 before they will pin it - apparently arthritis damage too far gone for a replacement ankle joint but I have been told that our area is not putting patients on waiting lists until March due to expected Flu/Covid situation but once on the list the op will be within three months .

The bonus is I have no problem with my knee joints - they were both replaced twenty years ago and are still working well .

Hope you find something that works for you soon .
