In Case of Emergency

PMRpro has suggested I post this as a new thread as it might be of interest to other members.

For those with a smart phone it is worth considering downloading an app called, "In Case of Emergency" . I first heard of it some years ago through my local Ramblers group.

We were encouraged to download it and if our phones were not suitable to keep a note of important details with us.

I lead WI walks so we copied the idea and we all, even those of us who have a smart phone keep a postcard sized information sheet in the front pocket of our walking bags.

Name

Address

Phone number of Next of Kin or preferred contact and name

GP and address and phone number

Medical conditions

Medications

Allergies

These are the things I have suggested we note down and everyone is happy with that. No-one of course see's the information unless it is an emergency and access is required. I do also keep a postcard in my handbag.

It is worth looking at The app, very easy to change and update.

That's an excellent suggestion. I have got my steroid card but it's so small, it could easily be overlooked when searching through a backpack (or my cluttered handbag, if I ever go out). I haven't got a smartphone and I'm wondering if the details can be accessed if the phone needs unlocking before it can be used? Could be a sticking point if you can't log-in and you could only use it if you could.

The app is free, but if you want a banner to show on locked phone you need to purchase - not sure how much haven’t got that far as yet

Thats a brilliant idea, but I though I would add that I have all that information on my iPhone/apple watch under "Health" it stores all the information you mentioned and more. If you dial emergency services it sends a message with your current location to your emergency contacts. Also my medical information and id can be viewed by a paramedic when the iPhone is locked.Its one of those things we often don't get around to doing and when we do we hope we never need it.

Yes I have this, emergency services can access it with everything they need to know without opening your phone. It is on IPhone without purchase but not sure about Android phones. Just need to remember to keep updating when you amend dosage

Great idea. I'll look at that.

I also have a clear phone protector so I put the steroid card inside in the hope it would be seen.

I also blue tacked another steroid card to my dashboard thinking logically that a car accident was the most likely reason I would be on my own and possibly not able to talk.

Thanks for this. I did a search on my Android phone. There seem to be quite a few. Is there one you specifically use?

Mine is ancient in phone terms, I bought it in 2017 but as I now know how to use it I'm reluctant to change.Sorry, my experiences of the young people in the phone shops have generally been good. They quickly realise I'm a nitwit and help.

Oops, on re-reading this morning I can see that is what you meant.I have looked in App store and there does now appear to be a lot of similar apps all wanting you to pay for them.

If you put 'ICE app' in your search engine the one The Ramblers group suggested comes up.

There are all types of gadgets people use now and I find trying to keep up with them a bit difficult however I do like hearing about them and seeing what they can do.

Although all members of the walking group do carry a mobile phone some still have perfectly functioning older types that are just phones. Aah remember the days. They know they would struggle with a newer and more complicated version so that is the reason we all also keep our postcard information in roughly the same place in our walking bags. Most, like me also keep one in handbag.

We have had two occasions when a member has collapsed, neither serious but the second time the member was taken to hospital for a check up and discharged after 2 hours.

The other we managed between us.

Thank you for bringing this up. I looked at the ❤️ shaped app on my iPhone, which is free, & found I had filled in my health details & emergency contact ages ago & completely forgot about it. It needed updating so thank you for the reminder. It’s reassuring to know that if I have to phone emergency services they will be able to access my details easily. My emergency contact will also know i have phoned them,

To those who don't have a iPhone or similar. One way to keep the information for emergency services is to put ICE as a name in contacts with your next of kin phone numbers on your phone then you know they will be able to get hold of someone who knows you. I've done this for years after been asked to by my first responder daughter, so I think they must know where to look.
