Sodium intake

We are often told to restrict sodium intake, and this is probably a good idea if we are accustomed to eating a lot of prepared foods. However it is possible to become sodium deficient if cooking for oneself and reducing salt to the barest minimum. This can lead to some inexplicable symptoms as I personally discovered, even though we are also told that being on pred may lead to an elevated sodium level. Here's an article explaining that a moderate salt intake, neither too much nor too little, is important, because both excess and deficiency can lead to poorer health.

A friend of my father's was in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in WW2 and they were given a small amount of salt every so often as I assume their diet was saltless. He said most of the men just ate the lot at once as they found they were craving for salt. My father's friend was a doctor and he actually counted each grain and rationed out the amount. I often think about this story when I use salt.

Wow, that is interesting. When I learned I might be salt deficient the woman who suggested it told me if salt tasted good, almost sweet, it meant I needed it. This is exactly what happened. She told me to pour some onto my side plate and take a bit on my fingertip, and to keep on doing that until it didn't taste good any more. I didn't get to that stage then, but the following evening, doing the same thing, suddenly it tasted awful. So our bodies have an inbuilt ability to know exactly the amount which is needed - provided it isn't disguised in our food.

That is fascinating. You haven’t started counting the grains yet then!!
