I am due to have 2nd AZ vaccine but with all the news about possible blood clots am now feeling a little apprehensive despite having had the 1st vaccine.
A study reported yesterday that the likelihood of getting clots from getting Covid itself was 8 times that of getting them after the AZ vaccine. I think that the article you linked probably relates to short term use of prednisolone. You can’t really delay or stop it when you’re in the middle of being treated for PMR/GCA. But it does say consult your doctor which is the right thing to do if you’re anxious.
I’ve not had my second dose of AZ yet but will take it when offered. All reported cases of clots happened after the first dose not the second as far as I am aware.
Here is an article on it with a link to the study. It’s not peer reviewed as yet I accept. Interesting figures on Pfizer/Moderna as compared to AZ re clotting too.
Latest we've been told in Canada is that there have been no clots observed after the second dose. And the risk of the clot is deemed extremely low. Additionally, now that they know it's not the usual sort of clot, they know how to treat it successfully.
You are more likely to be hit by lightening or killed on your way to get your vaccine so I should not worry. There are an enormous amount of things that could happen even in your own home. Nearly 109,000 last year died due to accidents in the home, a great deal more than the Astra Zeneca vaccine which is something like 7 and even that is not proved.
Highlandtiger has said almost everything I'd say. Just to add, the clots are mainly seen in younger women and possibly who are on the pill (which also has a higher risk of clots than the vaccine). That is why some countries are using it for older persons. The problem originally where they didn't use it in older people was because they wanted to be sure about the efficacy in over 60s which hadn't been looked at in the trials. That was satisfactory.
As for the effect of pred on the development of the immune response, there is nothing you can do about that because you are on long term pred. The discussion applies for patients on short term courses where you could wait until it was finished or you could delay injections until after the vaccine has been given. We do appear to develop some immunity but how much protection we have remains unknown until they have some figures and that takes time. In the meantime - something is better than nothing.
It comes down to the fact that the vaccine is not a silver bullet/get out of jail card for us. Once 70-80% of the population have had their jabs we will also be safer - but don't kid yourself, the fall in cases at present is at least as much due to the lockdown measures. We need to continue to stick to space/face/hygiene - in that order, not BoJo's version. Keeping away from others and wearing a mask are the main things we can do to keep safe and I'm changing nothing for the foreseeable future.
My concern is that one of the possible side affects of Pred includes blood clots as does lanszaprole and my BP meds adding AZ to the mix does give me some concern. Taking a cocktail of meds has to have some adverse affects so taking 4 meds that all have same possible risk of blood clots.
The A-Z clots seem to be associated with low platelet count. This is unusual. I don't know what the situation is with the medications, but apparently a high platelet count is not uncommon with inflammation and inflammatory diseases.
It is a platelet inhibitor - there are other reasons for clotting besides that so I don't know how effective it would be. This strange and rare clotting is associated with low platelet counts so I suspect that complicates things.
Interestingly, when my doctor told me I have a high platelet count (not enough, apparently, to be worrying, and he says I've had it for a long time, looking at my records) I looked it up and this is one of the things common in autoimmune conditions, Who knew? I didn't. Is this one of things which makes our risk of stroke a bit higher?
This is such good advice... thank you. There is not much info out there on how having Immune system issues .. being on Pred and how any of the vaccine performs. I will follow your advice and continue to SpaceFaceHygiene until more is known and perhaps have blood test opportunity to test for antibodies if they offer it. Thanks again for all the great support/advice.
The article I just read says they are a different type of clot than what is seen with birth control clots. My husband is refusing the Az shot but I argue the risk of clots and severe complications with COVID far outweigh the vaccine clot risk.
I did say possibly - and that is what was being postulated earlier. However, given the number of cases compared to the number of vaccines - they are rarer than most risks you are exposed to on the way to the vaccine centre so you are absolutely correct!
I’ve had both doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine with no side effects. I’m on 19mg prednisolone and am 75. The likelihood of blood clots is less than being struck by lightning. There is more chance of suffering these rare blood clots if you catch covid
Yes, I had my 2nd AZ jab 3 weeks ago and no side effects at all. Don't be nervous, it will be fine. I had a pulmonary embolism after birth of my 1st baby. Jab a doddle and I wasn't worried.
Hi Liby I got my second one on Thursday and felt ok a little bit of neck pain and headache and I am on 30 mg of prednisolone at the moment also I was very ill with the first one and was worried about the second so all good .
Yes I had my second dose 3 weeks ago and had no side effects whatsoever this time/ I had a slight febrile reaction after the first shot. The risks of clots are far higher with Covid than from the vaccine. I didn't hesitate to have the second dose. I am just very glad to have had them both.
Yes I have ... in my case, absolutely no reaction to either ( second one last week). Currently on 40 mg Pred. The downside is that apparently our protection is only “better than nothing”, and we should proceed with safety precautions as if not vaccinated.
I've had my 2nd AZ vaccine. I'm currently on 13 mg Prednisone-in my 11th year of taking Pred ,for what is now described as Refractory GCA.I had no problems with either shot.
Hi yes I have had my 2nd yesterday. After the 1st I felt quite fluish from 8pm till 12 the next day. So far this time I have felt fine. Hope you will be also.
Now four years of Pred, and now had my 2nd AZ jab (as 61 year old with GCA). Only side effect has been 'more tired' than I am usually, though still walking, birding and gardening every day even if only a little bit! The 'risks' associated with C19, any of the vaccines, and indeed any other form of incident or accident in the wider world, are all a very personal thing, but numerically, there is really very little to worry about even for this pandemic - providing that one looks after spacing, masking up if in proximity to others, and hygiene, then risk is really quite small. Hope you feel comfortable for your 2nd jab and good luck.
After my first shot I felt a bit tired but no other effects; not even a sore arm. No side effects at all after my second. I've been taking Prednisolone for two and a half years. Starting with 40mg, after a few months I gradually reduced to my current 1 mg. My consultant today has sanctioned stopping it from tomorrow. 😃
