Prednisolone and surgery

I am due to have an op which will involve a general anaesthetic and about three days in hospital. I would welcome some advice on talking to the anaesthetist on how best to manage taking my steroids and PMR. My current dose 12.3.

Just tell the anaesthetist what your drug regimen is, how long you have been on pred and so on. You will have a pre-op assessment - mention it then and make sure it is noted and also tell the anaesthetist before the op, I have always seen one the day before when they come to check such things.

You recommended that I should probably take pred the night before or early morning of the procedure - thank you. One further question how do I take account of the fact that I take e/c pred with time lapse in absorption? My appointment time is 12 midday.I'm having my pre assessment this morning and want to know what questions to ask. Think I may be getting a bit paranoid about all this - I haven't been in hospital for over 40 years so perhaps understandable.

The tablet will be through and the pred will be working - in fact we often suggest patients on the e/c take it before bed as it is then working nicely by early morning which is when it is needed. You may never go back!!!

I took mine very early when I had my hip done last year. I then dislocated my hip and had an emergency op to put it back so did not have the chance to do anything about the timing! I never thought about it until now.

As Pro says mention it to your Anaesthetist when you see them pre operatively. If necessary you will be given hydrocortisone cover in theatre & make sure you take your Meds in with you, particularly your Pred, when l was in the Senior Nurse said for me to be responsible for my own Pred the following morning.

Good Luck with your Surgery 🍀

I would reiterate what the others have said as that was my experience when I had surgery. Good luck.
