Hi my Gp diagnosed PMR iv had blood tests after extreme pain in legs arms groin muscles. Will I get referred to a rheumatologist or will my Gp look after my PMR. I’m on prednisone 15mg seeing him tomorrow for review. Just uncertain how this role.

Thanks

If your PMR is straightforward GPs are capable of treating you. It is recommended that you see a Rheumy once, but not sure how easy that is at the moment, and not every PMR patient does anyway.

You might like to have a look at this - just for additional info - healthunlocked.com/pmrgcauk...

Iv been a bit dizzy here and there and palpitations I’m going to tell Gp tomorrow. I don’t really want to see docs if I don’t need but early doors so I’m a novice. But thanks for that.

I forgot to say that a friendly and good GP who listens to you is preferable to a poor rheumy!!!

In the UK a lot of patients are managed by their GP anyway and Covid probably makes that even more likely. If it is straightforward it is fine - atypical patients - young for PMR, don't respond well to pred, struggle to reduce the dose or develop signs of GCA - should be referred. If you get signs of GCA that should be as an emergency - probably the only emergency a rheumy gets to see!

I only saw my GP when I was diagnosed and for about 9 months after. If I have a problem I will see my GP and normally have an annual review.

Around seventy five per cent of people with PMR never see a rheumy. However there are some GPs who do not seem to know much about PMR or are afraid of steroids it seems. In that case clammer for a rheumy, if you have a good GP you may find they are actually better than a lot of rheumies.

My GP is better than my rheumatologist. I was referred by a locum who certainly understood PMR; I think she may have followed orders to put me in touch with a consultant But my rheumatologist is useless. If I develop GCA symptoms I will go to a different hospital to make sure I miss that rheumatologist. Fortunately I live within striking distance of Moorfields Eye Hospital

Stick with your GP if possible and don't be afraid to refer him/her to academic papers especially those authored or co-authored by Prof Dasgupta.

I have had some useless rheumatologists too, I have now given them up as part of my New Year resolution!
