A pint a day

I mentioned yesterday that I just achieved my first 0 Pred day in two years and without a flare. I put it down to my very slow taper plan but I was just wondering if my average Guinness intake of a pint a day might of helped😁🍺

10 REASONS WHY GUINNESS IS GOOD FOR YOU

Spinach, kale, avocado, Guinness—A few of our favorite health foods. OK maybe we’re using the word “health food” a little freely, but we do have proof that it’s good for you (just like the old advertising slogan says). So this St. Patrick's Day, fill your pint glass with the good stuff. Sláinte! (Which btw, is an Irish Gaelic saying for “cheers” and literally translates to “health.” Coincidence? We think not). poster 3_cropped1) Antioxidants make it heart healthy Move over, red wine. A 2003 study claimed that a pint of Guinness could cut the risk of blood clots forming in the arteries, while other beers didn’t have the same effect. You can thank flavonoids, a plant-based antioxidant found in certain drinks and dark chocolate, for this heart healthy benefit. vintage poster 2_cropped2) Iron does a body good Though Guinness only contains .3 mg of iron per pint, most adults don’t reach their recommended 9-18 mg/day, so we say every sip counts! There was even a time when Guinness was given to post-op patients and pregnant women, and as recently as 2010, it was given to people after they donated blood to help replenish their iron levels.

3) It’s considered a “light” beer Don’t let the color fool ya. A Guinness only has 15 more calories than a Bud Light and 5 more calories than the same amount of skim milk. Plus, you’re going to feel a lot fuller after a Guinness than a Bud Light (thanks to the CO2 and Nitrogen carbonation that leads to its thick, creamy texture), saving yourself from the extra food calories later. Drunchies beware. zach-meaney-248696-unsplash_cropped

4) It’s good for your bones Beer contains a plant hormone called phytoestrogen, which is key to building dense bones, plus has calcium and dietary silicon, important for growth and development of bone and connective tissues. Studies have shown moderate beer drinkers to be less likely to have osteoporosis and lower risk of hip fractures. Of course, like with anything, moderation is key – overindulging can have reverse effects.

5) It’s relatively low on alcohol content When comparing to other beers, Guinness has a lower ABV (4.2% compared with your average beer at 5%). So for party goers and bar frequenters, Guinness leans on the more responsible side.

6) It will make you the life of the party If Elle Woods taught us anything, it’s that endorphins make us happy. Light to moderate drinking triggers these “feel good” chemicals in your brain (though as many of us have probably experienced, overdoing it will have the opposite effect). So on St. Patrick’s Day, help yourself to a pint or two of Guinness, and enjoy being the most fun, social, happiest friend at the party. Bonus effect: It will make everyone around you more fun and attractive too. guinness-background-hd-1080p-445594_cropped7) It contains folate, fiber, and ferulic acid Guinness contains more folate, a nutrient we need to make DNA, than any other beer. And it’s high in barley, which makes it one of the beers with the highest levels of fiber (while Bud Light and most other light beers don’t contain any. Thank u, next). High levels of barley also equal high levels of ferulic acid, which is associated with improved immune function. And all that fiber and ferulic acid lead to a couple of other benefits too…

8) It’s anti-inflammatory Studies have shown the consumption of hops (in beer form) interfere with inflammation causing compounds. Plus, a fiber rich diet can help reduce inflammation.

9) It lowers bad cholesterol Not to sound like a broken record, but have we told you about the benefits of fiber? It’s really good for you. And the soluble fiber in beer can help reduce LDL (aka “bad” cholesterol) – plus it has a variety of other health benefits like promoting healthy blood sugar and blood cholesterol levels.

10) It helps hydrate post-workout Maybe the most surprising of them all, one study showed that people who drank a post-workout pint of beer were more hydrated than those who drank water. Probably why a beer at the top of a hike feels so right. guinness poster_cropped So there you have it. A little bit of science and a little bit of Irish luck. Either way, feel good this weekend when you reach for that creamy, malty goodness. Not feeling the booze? Just like Guinness is now vegan (true story!), we like to keep it green every day too.

Note I am not advocating that everyone should rush out and buy a carton of Guinness it really depends what medication you are on.

I have always enjoyed a glass of Guinness so very interesting reading.... but just to play devils advocate let's not forget that despite all these praise-worthy attributes....it is still a glass of alcohol! It may provide up to 30% of your daily iron intake but just one egg yolk provides the same amount of iron as 3pts of Guinness and is a much healthier way to acquire it. Similarly, there are many much healthier ways to achieve it's other so-called attributes through healthy diet and exercise and let's not forget the research that has shown a definitive link between even small amounts of daily alcohol and the predisposition to breast cancer in women. Alcohol is a toxin that the body works hard to eliminate even when we're fit and healthy, so although it all seems to give the green light for Guinness, I don't believe any of those 'attributes' are consistently effective enough to be worthy of superceding more healthy alternatives. I'm not saying people shouldn't drink Guinness, I'm just saying that these so-called health benefits are not a license to drink it freely and it's still over shadowed by the fact it's a glass of alcohol and alcohol is NOT healthy. As I said......just being devil's advocate, and feel you're post was just being a bit of lighthearted fun. If people want a glass once in a while then that's fine, and their choice and no harm done probably. We need to enjoy ourselves and sometimes a glass of delicious, ice cold, creamy Guinness may be the way, but lets just be sensible and not kid ourselves that alongside the 'positives', there are no 'negatives'. CHEERS though!🙂

Hi Kendrew,

Yes it was meant to be a bit tongue in cheek, I don’t actually drink a pint a day but do have a couple of pints at the Country Club after a round of golf two or three times a week, therefore average about a pint a day😄

Actually it brought back memories. My OH's grandmother was the local midwife and after I had a miscarriage she told me to drink Guiness and milk as a "pick me up". Perhaps I should try that again!?!😂

Slàinte Mhaith ☘️🍺

My Mum drank a Guinness every lunch time & it did her good; when my eldest son went to Uni that was what he drank as he felt ‘Guinness Was Good for Him!’ 😉

Great News on reaching Zero Pred! ☘️

I remember my grandmother used to have a 'stout' every night before bedtime...."for my rheumatics"!! She was diagnosed with breast cancer at 74 and lived to be 96....so maybe Johnny's right!

DorsetLady profile image

I was in Germany in late 60s when expecting my daughter - and was told by locals to consume a drink similar to Guinness/stout because it was good for pregnant ladies.....so there is an element of truth in Johnny’s spiel.😊

Its only 8.20am here, and I've not had my breakfast yet, but all this talk of Guinness means I could murder an ice cold Guinness right now!! 😄😄Have a good day.

Yes it did...5 mile drive to town. All very well organised....part of the main council car park cordoned off ...no charge. Short walk across pedestrian crossing...plenty of helpers if required. Arrived about 5 mins before time allotted - less than 2 min wait....nice sit down afterwards .....and home in time for tea! Or coffee in my case.

Hope everyone’s goes as smoothly.

Kendrew in reply to DorsetLady

That sounds really well organised with no more time than necessary around other people. Pleased it went smoothly. Coffee and cake then!😃

No cake....yet, but still have a little bit of home made Christmas left...might have to be lunch. 😳 😉...well I’ve been a brave girl, and deserve it ....

Well that’s my excuse, and I’m sticking to it! No-one around to tell me otherwise.
