Ladies World! Coping! Must Represent My OH On This One!

For my OH. Where are the public toilets out there now? Rubbish it is! OK you may venture out to a garden centre, anywhere ! But! Problem if you only just like a couple of coffees it seems!

Basic functions seem very underprovided for now? Don't know if it's the same everywhere? I can always go behind a tree! If there is one!!

Serious comment on my carer OH experience.

Photo Japanese Maple. I'll give my posts a rest for a while now ATB ALL.

Not an issue down here - if you have given your track & trace details and are drinking indoors - facilities are available.

However if you have coffee outdoors and don’t give details - you cannot use indoor toilet.

Fair enough in my view - but some have a grumble about it!

But then some holiday makers have some funny ideas at the best of times - regarding being on beach and using indoor facilities when they aren’t buying anything from cafe!

in reply toDorsetLady

Gawd DL! The complications of it all eh! Good job you're on the ball. Doesn't help the bladder though!

Toilet facilities should be available to everyone especially if you have bought a coffee from an establishment and then sit outside to drink it. Even if you haven't bought anything entry to toilets should be available if not mandatory in any civilised community. There's no problem with this in Spain where you are able to use services wherever you go and I am sure it encourages more tourism healthily in the long run. Maybe we should stick to the current situation where people were deficating on beeches and in private gardens as happened in Brighton earlier this year??

Not saying it's right or wrong.....The cafe I am talking abou has a public toilet with 25 metres so that how they get away with it.

Don't advise going behind a tree here - can turn out expensive! I assume all our cafes are still providing the service - free to customers of course but a glass of water here costs less than a public toilet in the UK ...

in reply toPMRpro

Needs Must rules PMR! Don't get me going on the economics!

PMRpro profile image

Peeing in public is an offence here - and the fines are hefty!

in reply toPMRpro

Yer they should be PMR! But when there are few open public "bogs" available? And this was before Covid hit! The economics of it all Eh! Something lost in the basics mate with the rulers!

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to

All cafes and hotels must allow use of their toilets - I suppose you could call them public! We do have public toilets but mostly they have a turnstile and it costs. Occasionally you see a sign saying free for customers, 50 cents for others. Seems fair to me.

in reply toPMRpro

Must be a joy! How do you pay? Cash or Credit Card?

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to

No idea - I'd rather go to a cafe!!

in reply toPMRpro

No wonder Italy is bankrupt with all those available toilets! Whatever the law is here in theory England! They are rarer than hen's teeth! Most of the civic ones have been shut down! Bit like finding a litter bin! No wonder the place is developing into a tip!

Rant Over!

Has it come to that?? The mind boggles.😂 Think I'll stay at home.

It is a problem right now. We took a ride the other day and finally found a gas station with an open bathroom. I am not above finding an abandoned dirt road, but there are always snakes and poison ivy to contend with.

in reply tofmkkm

Hat's off to that one! It's more nettles & brambles here!

My OH does too, poor soul. On our favourite walk there are views, open skies and space but no loos. That means half an hour of brisk walking then back in the car for a scoot home. How I long for a sit on a bench to drink it all in.

MrsNails profile image
MrsNails in reply to123-go

I think we tend to have a coffee before we go out too so l think that has a diuretic effect on him, so maybe no drinks before we head out......

in reply to123-go

Facilities are underrated in the financial crunching that goes on now days! It's a very human need that needs providing for & used to be!

in reply toMrsNails

OH enjoys a coffee & chat with her mates. No current facilities in our local country park cafe due to Covid restriction! Some garden centres seem to have a problem too! Maybe from overuse!!

I walked in Arrow Valley country park yesterday, outside coffee booth with tables and use of indoor loo if needed! Loving the maple, ours have lost nearly all their leaves now, but were beautiful . 🍁🍁🍁🍁🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂

in reply toYork54

Haven't been over there this year! Lovely area. Good news that the cafe & loo is open! Not so at the Lickey Hills. No loo & cafe serving drinks through a hatch!!

Maple grown from ground seed collected about 20 years years ago at Bodenham Arboretum! Some of my others just starting to turn.

Some problems are easier to solve than others:

I always have these in the car. You never know when you're going to be in a 4+ hour traffic jam in and around NYC.

in reply toGOOD_GRIEF

GG. You've still gotta find some privacy to use it eh!!

GOOD_GRIEF profile image
GOOD_GRIEF in reply to

You can use these in the car. Alternatively, since you don't have to drop your drawers, all you need do is turn your back on potential observers.

There are also models specifically for ladies and kids, but I haven't found them to be more effective.

How does that work for ladies wearing trousers on a long car journey?

You scootch to the edge of the seat and adjust the device to collect the flow.

That reminds me of a time when my son was around five years old and his grandma told him that she used to live in a house with an outside lavatory. He was horrified, imagining that the lavatory was in the street and that people could see her. She told him that it was fine: she used to wrap a blanket around herself. 😳

When my husband was little, he used one of the display toilets in the department store.

MrsNails profile image
MrsNails in reply toGOOD_GRIEF

My cousin Mike did that in the Display in the Window in a Large Department Store, l got the blame for laughing 😂

What is happening about public toilets? You are not always even wanting a drink when you have the need.

in reply toprunus

Quite a few of our high streets, parks & green spaces don't have any Prunus which leads to the inevitable tough choice if you're caught short shall we say!

prunus profile image
prunus in reply to

There used to be more than there are now. I think one of the problems for Councils has been vandalism. Possibly drugs comes into it. I don't know.

in reply toprunus

Yes!There were problems with vandalism etc in our area! However the council has drastically cut back on street & park maintenance/facilities over the past 10 years of austerity! Once things start going pear shaped it seems they escalate & local civic respect goes downhill! Needs a cultural change for the better certainly! ATB

A lot of ‘stand alone’ (not in shops/cafes) were closed long before COVID where we used to live because they were used by druggies, drunks, and the homeless to shelter! Awful for the latter.

Thankfully I can manage but OH can’t, he suffers badly with urgency to go.

He doesn’t go anywhere only to appointments because of it. I’ve always been particular where I ‘go’ and would have to be pretty desperate nowadays!

I’m afraid we’re having to adjust for the minute and have the coffee at home.

Love Maples. I left the most gorgeous

30 year old one behind when we moved. Am growing a replacement here.

Look forward to speaking again in the New Year perhaps. In the meantime keep safe and well both of you.

in reply toTelian

A regular night tripper myself to the loo T, it certainly ruins my slumber! So understand OH on that one!

Vandalism etc gave councils the excuse to do this over the past 20 years! But it's a no brainer long term! Same as litter bins here! Different generations eh! Take it home with you! You must be joking! Chuck it out the car window more like!

Anyway no perfection in myself mate so !!!!

Hope your new replacement is going well T. ATB to you both.

Telian profile image
Telian in reply to

Afraid we are a dying breed. Some of today’s generation are unlike any other.

The jury’s out on the replacement!

in reply toTelian

Slow growers they are T. Your old one must have been too big to dig out eh!

Telian profile image
Telian in reply to

I know they are and yes it would have killed it to move it. It was a golden/ green colour. I also left a red like yours.

We do have two giant acers here, I now know! Like big trees - leaves a very dark maroon nearly black colour and had pink flowers twice this year. Forgotten their name.

in reply toTelian

Sound like Crimson Kings! Big trees very impressive T.

Just Can't Wait card available for people who need to use a loo quickly. The idea is to show the card to the staff and they hopefully let you use the loo. Works most of the time but sometimes gets refused for 'insurance reasons". We've never been turned away and have used it in Home Bargains, Aldi and Lidl. Both me and my hubby have "urgency" problems so it's really useful.

McDonalds are my choice of loos as they are usually clean, unlocked and the staff don't challenge you to buy anything. The McDonalds app is great for locating branches while travelling.

Public toilets seem to be disappearing in the England. Apparently it's because. there's no local authority funding for them from central government.

We also carry an emergency bag in the car with a shewee and a jar :) The joys of getting older!

in reply toS4ndy

Never knew about that org S4. Thanks for that!

As an aside! I've never had a McDonalds meal! So it could be a first! ATB

I participated in an EU project AENEAS 2005-2008. We split up into two groups to find out what was most needed for old People in a city centre. Both groups walked around and they found that toilets and benches wrote the most important things for older peple

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toDomstad

They have just removed the less uncomfortable benches in the village - replaced with trendy modern concrete blocks with wooden slats on top and not a back support in sight. They are in full sun in summer and no sun in autumn! I'm not impressed! And the flatter walks where the elderly would go - not an easily accessible bench to be found - just in the middle of the playgrounds. No wonder most of the people with difficulty walking have rollators, take your own seat ;)

in reply toPMRpro

It's the thought that goes into it PMR! What was the old saying! "Never Mind The Quality Feel The Width". ATB

in reply toDomstad

Says something there then! Nothing changes much eh Dom!

I leave a She-wee in the car, knowing it’s there helps.

If you can hopefully make it back to the car mate!

Public toilets all closed in my area for ages now . It really is inconvenient , excuse the pun ! Quite a few coffee shops are Community Toilets but I would feel I ought to buy a coffee to justify my visit.

All about councils saving money, so so

wrong.
