Shaking?

Does anyone else get shaking hands with pred? I have noticed a few times but very specifically when I was trying to reach for water to rinse at the dentist and when I was signing off for my treatment at dentist also.

I’m wondering if it’s anything to do with the adrenaline boost because of dental treatment and because I hate the dentist?!

I’ve noticed it slightly a couple of other times but nothing as obvious, I literally couldn’t sign because my hand was so shaky!!

I’m 54 so not quite ready for the shaking that many older people have!

Thanks in advance for info

I did with Pred and started at 54, 3 years ago but can’t remember at what dose it stopped. It could have been the combination of Pred plus Adenaline. I was more shakey if I didn’t have enough potassium in my diet, so one of the few carbs I had was half an greenish banana when it got bad again. But generally, Pred made me shakier generally.

Thanks, this is exactly what I needed 🙂

H loopy65, In the chair I find yself tensed up gripping the sides of my jeans or something. Then when they put me upright my arms and hands shake. It has got better since I started being able to do a bit more stretching with my arms. And I purposefully try and relax my hands and arms.

Last year when I tried to cut some weed with long handles clippers I ouldnt get a drink to my lips for about an hour. My entire arms and hands were shaking. 56 to7 then. It still happens occasionally like when I decide no basket shopping and grip things.

My thyroid condition caused this far more.

I’ve been on thyroxine for years and it’s all ‘on an even keel’ (nice that something is lol) so I’m happy to be able to rule that out 🙂

Pred can have an impact. My dose of Levothyroxine was reduced. I expect you know all that and are regularly monitored. Yet another autoimmune disease!

Oh that’s why they give Adrenaline free anaesthetic to me, I wondered.

Really helpful thanks, that may be the issue as I’ve only noticed it the two times I’ve been recently both of which I needed anaesthetic at!! Keeping an eye on it now!!

So envious!!! My teeth used to be the one bit of me that was ok lol - had to ‘let it go’ and try not to stress about it 😉

Hello shaky, sorry I meant to type Loopy65. You sound like me, but I'm one of the OLD'uns, 71 years, and 21 months with PMR GCA and Pred, so yes, I'm Mister Shaky. Their is a lighter side to it though, do what I do. Try in your head, to find a tune that fits with the tap tap tap, of the bottle of liquid that you are trying to pour into a glass. It makes me smile, hope it does for you. Trevor.

😀 - keeping (and using!) a sense of humour through it all makes a HUGE difference. One thing our family does is a LOT of laughing and it carries us through, really does. Thanks for your reply, it did make me smile 🙂

I had it before pred. My GP said it was old age! It went away again when I started pred though.

My husband suffers with essential tremor - and it started in his early 50s at the latest.

I also have the shakes if I have tried to maintain a position or hold something with bent arms - an early problem in PMR but better on higher doses of pred.

There is adrenaline in the local anaesthetic too - I had the shakes post any dental work that required an anaesthetic and for years I went without one for almost everything. Then a super dentist in Scotland asked why - and told me about the adrenaline component. By asking for the version without it I can have less uncomfortable dentistry!

Will definitively talk to her about it the next time, thanks!

My daughter who has fibromyalgia has to have adrenaline free anaethetic too, Recently given wrong one and still shaking next day. First time I witnessed it I thought it was a massive seizure!

I don't think it is particularly rare - maybe too much effort for some dentists ...

Hi Loopy65 - I too have slightly shaky hands - I notice it when painting fine details on my watercolour paintings - it’s hard to paint a straight line !!!

Yes, that was the type of thing! Very strange indeed for me, my signature looked nothing like normal - quite unnerving. Don’t think I have any big dental work planned but will keep an eye to see if it happens again. Wondering if there’s an adrenaline rush anyway (which there can be for me at the dentist as I’m less than keen!) I may end up a bit shaky anyway. Going back on the 17th for follow up so we’ll see 😀

I have hand tremors nearly every afternoon, but the tremors are usually gone before 4am. The higher the pred dose the worse the tremors.

I’m thinking it was the adrenaline from injection at dentist combined with the Pred. I can’t remember if I’ve been aware of it at other times (brain fog!) - hoping that, either way, now I’m tapering it may leave!

Hands certainly shake, but I'm not sure it isn't just old age!

I get shaky hands and it’s only happened since I’ve been on pred
