Tell her about your sock, sounds like she needs it.

Intriguing!

The nesting on long threads gets confusing. The contribution appears in your in-box and when you click it you land at any random place, so you have to search for the poster. Or have I failed to pick up something else that everybody knows?

I'm always getting confused! This is a private Bee special I'm sure she'll tell you about if it will help you.

I believe one of my early posts on the forum at Halloween made a brief mention of the Headache sock and the fact that it makes me look like a House Elf. Necessity drives invention at times.

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply toBlearyeyed

I remember the house elf but not a sock on your head.

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply toSheffieldJane

That's why I felt like a House Elf , remember how he used to tie the sock around his head in the film?!!

My sock Gryffindor striped too , although it was the length and firm stretch of it that counts for the job rather than the colour, allowing me to tie a chunky knot which gives acupressure to the most intense pain point and put mild compression around my head reducing my Occipital and Temple Pain.

It works when I get days or weeks of Migraine , Neuralgic or Non GCA Severe Headaches , not to get rid of them entirely , but to make it more bearable and reduce the eye pain.

Plus the family walk in and see it and know to reduce the noise !!

I don't know if a head band, sock , scarf would work for everyone , it was a trial and error thing , it works most for my Vascular related Headaches when I feel like someone has blown the top of my head and is poking knitting needles through my temples.

It's usually accompanied by the more standard tricks for Headache Management , a strong smell of Menthol, as rubbing Vicks vapor rub into the temples , across the sinus over the eyebrows ( take care to keep away from eyes) and behind and under the ears and back of the neck really can help. Then it's the acute Migraine Medication , lots of fluids and Vitamin C , light sugar , spice and additive free meals , and the well timed nap regularly in the day to reduce the Pain and , hopefully, the feeling of Tired Sadness that follows it.

That sounds like a good solution. Maybe a small neoprene back brace and a very small stick with ice on the spot might be a version too. My back warmer is big so would be a balaclava!

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply to

The sock to trial and error , like a thin scarf really it's softer to the skin and the menthol was gentler than ice , I have Neuralgias so ice can trigger that .

Plus with my tiny head a brace would be , as you say like a balaclava 😋

I’ve found some Vicks to try.

I have used the vicks remedy on a headache since you mentioned it and it worked well although OH thought i had lost the plot!!

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toYellowbluebell

OH brought me some Tiger Balm - suspect it was a freebie at a meeting - and it was amazing. Only downside was getting the top off the tiny tin - I'm sure the Vick version is easier to access!

Yellowbluebell profile image
Yellowbluebell in reply toPMRpro

I make my own tiger balm now and put it i sensible sized containers with easy lids

Now there's an idea for chrissy pressies ...

Yellowbluebell profile image
Yellowbluebell in reply toPMRpro

I do headach balms and body butters and give them to family as extra little presents. Grandson has his own bedtime balm which only has lavender, shea butter and wax in it and he has to have it on at bedtime or he insists he cant sleep!!

Blearyeyed profile image
Blearyeyed in reply toPMRpro

It made my skin less itchy too , and I agree about the Tiger Balm tin , it makes you work for your rewards !😋

I think that happens to everybody . I found the trick was that although you don't arrive on the exact reply they are sending you too , it's usually put you on a reply or two above it. So if you scroll down you see it.

PMRproAmbassador in reply toSheffieldJane

You don't land at a random place, you are just above or just below the post for which you got the notification, it isn't far. It will usually be the next nest of replies.

Now you know how I feel - I follow all threads to see all the reponses!!!

Do you want replies to the thread stopped? You only have to ask ...

Apologies but how can I see the thread about headaches? I only get the weekly email and seem to have come in on the tail end of the thread. I have had a constant headache for weeks on end which doctors cannot seem to diagnose. It is severely debilitating. I’ve had a brain MRI scan which has shown nothing untoward. I am on 7mg prednisolone a day (PMR for 5 years) and one doctor thought it could be the cause. A neurologist said it was probably migraine and suggested a steroid injection in my occipital nerve to block the pain.

Many thanks

Zhenya

Thank you! Yes that’s the thread and I’ve read it all now. It seems Sheffield Jane and I have similar headaches. If I get a diagnosis or cure I will be sure to let the forum know in case it helps others.

in reply toZhenya

It's always good to share such info. I hope they calm for you.

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply toZhenya

That is interesting. Do yours vary in intensity too? Mine begin on the right frontal skull and gradually spread across my head, sometimes the base of my skull gets involved. My eyes feel sore and water a lot. There may be several things contributing. They never go completely.

Zhenya profile image
Zhenya in reply toSheffieldJane

Yes they vary in intensity but never go away altogether. My head feels like a lead weight most of the time and I also feel it in my face.

Having seen a private neurologist in desperation and had a brain scan, I don’t know what to do next. The steroid injection he recommended in my occipital nerve scares me so I haven’t opted for that...yet! My gp has suggested a migraine clinic, so I will explore that in the meantime. I hope you get some relief soon. I will keep in touch and let you know if I have any helpful advice.

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply toZhenya

I will keep you posted. I do have cervical Spondylosis, and had a further neck X Ray a couple of years ago. I am wondering about arthritis now.

Zhenya profile image
Zhenya in reply toSheffieldJane

My headache started with neck and shoulder pain last October. I had a cervical spine MRI in January that revealed cervical spondylitis, which I was told is a form of osteo-arthritis . No treatment was suggested other than an annual zoledronic infusion to strengthen bones. The neck and shoulder pain has subsided but the headache persists. It could be referred pain from the neck... maybe yours is too?

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply toZhenya

That’s what I wondered. A gentle neck massage can loosen the pain at the base of my skull, but not the top right side of my skull.

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply toZhenya

Zoledronic treatment has headache ( most things do though) in the side effects.

Zhenya profile image
Zhenya in reply toSheffieldJane

I won’t risk that then!

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply toZhenya

Don't take painkillers then - as they can also cause headache! If you didn't take any drug with headache as a potential side effect you wouldn't take much!
