Has anyone had a tooth implant while on prednisone for PMR?

I have been on steroids for 3+ years and currently on 12mg. I am worried the pred. may interfere with the healing process. I have osteopenia and have fractures. I would love to hear from anyone that has gone thru this or any other surgery and how you healed. Except for the PMR I tend to be in pretty good health.

Hi Linny

Are you on any Bisphosphonates ie Alendronic Acid? As they are contra indicated in Tooth Surgery, otherwise l’d have a discussion with your dentist.

Healing is always a concern when on Steroids, l haven’t had any issues healing while l’m on Prednisolone but everyone is different.

Hi Linny , I’ve been on Prednisilone for over 7 years now . Currently having a horrible flare .

During that time, I’ve had 3 dental implants and had my gallbladder removed

All procedures went well, with perfect healing and no problems. I’ve never taken the weekly bone medication.

My blood pressure is slightly up too , but that’s stress and lack of exercise.

I’m sure you’ll be fine.

They do advice taking a little extra pred pre the procedure.

You’re welcome, as long as your dentist is a good one , you should be fine . I’d mention it to your GP too , they can advise if you need extra Prednisilone for the invasive appointments.

I have terrible teeth and already have lots of crowns and implants. Now I`m taking steroids I asked the dentist what would happen if I needed any invasive treatment. He said he would check everything to make sure I was okay, and if there was any doubt he would send me to the dental hospital.

Hi Linny3,

Just had the studs put in prior for the replacement 2 teeth 3 weeks ago and looking forward to my new teeth in another 9 weeks, the process was much easier than the root canal work done previously which ruined my original teeth all feels really strong and well.

I don't think there is any cause for concern on both counts, I will be 69 next month, my surgeon insisted on 3 mths after tooth extraction for the studs and 3 months after studs for the teeth but he was not concerned with pred, he insisted on the 3 months lapse to allow proper healing and minimise risk of infection, good luck and hope all goes well.

Thanks for the reply. I had one done years ago(pre pred.) and it got infected and almost lost it.

Glad you posted this, as my vertebroplasty will be in February and it addresses some of my concerns also. My best to you. 🤗

Yes, I had an implant 3 months ago and was shocked by how well it went. The implant is wonderful. My PMR journey is 3 years old and I am on 10mg of prednisone a day *( plus many other meds.)

Hoping all goes well for you.

I’m on all of it including actemra and prolia. Plus 10 years of pred. So far been through a broken femur and knee replacement. All went well but slow. I just got an infection in th knee replacement. Working on clearing that up. I believe it will get cleared up and I will eventually walk again.

hi Linny3 had 5 teeth removed and two implants put in a month ago, caused some rucas with my GCA treatment. Pred was increased but now back down to 10mg, i am healing but will be another three months before actual crowns are installed. healing in my opinion has gone well. yes i had a trip back to emergency when my body decided to go into shock, became very dizzy and disorientated, BP down 68/30, after that initial shock i recovered well. but i am concerned about doing any more surgery and i have more on the list.
