Although I have never met her, Dr Sarah Mackie at Leeds seems to be highly thought of and is very involved in research.

Dr Sarah Mackie, is a Patron of PMR GCA UK charity.

Sarah is also a leading researcher into GCA and PMR. You could not do better.

However there is also another lady, Dr Helen Twohig, who is a practising GP and also in the research field, Helen is located in Sheffield.

Yorkshire is a big county and there are others..............so where you are prepared to travel to - would be helpful.

You can put both of their names in your search engine.

BTW Neither does private - so you will need a referral from your GP.

Thank you for your help. I'm in Harrogate, North Yorkshire but can travel around the county.

Dr Sarah Mackie, based at Wharfdale Hospital, Otley, has been a very understanding Rheumatologist for the last 4 years. Our diseases are her specialism.

Thank you, that is close to me but I am presuming there will be a wait.

I think you're right about a wait to see Sarah Mackie. I waited more than 6 months to see her. She doesn't see private patients, so you would be on the NHS list, unless your GP could ask for an emergency appointment.

I'm near Harrogate but can travel around the county if needed. I have some symptoms of GCA but bloods are ok and I'm 40 so drs do not think it is. I am not on steroids so I am hoping to see someone quickly as I am worried for my sight.

The first sign, eg blurry eyes, loss of vision - A&E and fast..................do not delay, you could lost partial or total sight...............

My GP was prepared to refer me to her even though I live in Sheffield. It is worth the travel. I have also participated in her research projects - also worth it.

If you really are prepared to travel - the next name on my list after Sarah Mackie in Leeds and the team at the QE in Gateshead (as far as I know they don't do private but I might be wrong) is Rod Hughes in Chertsey who does do private work.
