I always think dsns stands for don't stop, nearly stop. I know it doesn't so could somebody please remind this old fool what the first two letters stand for ?

DSNS
Dead Slow Nearly Stop
Dead Slow, Nearly Stop 😳
Doesn’t matter really what it stands for so long as you follow it and it works.
When they were discussing its use in a clinical study, they were a bit concerned about the "dead" bit - bless, them, little bunny medics not old enough to remember the road sign that said "Dead Slow" meaning to proceed but VERY slowly! You don't see it often these days in the UK do you?
Not very often - but in summer Dorset does put up signs reminding drivers about motorcyclists - have one just by the entrance to my close - it is on a fast bend - despite the 40mph limit!
Do you stll use miles in the UK? I thought you were metric?
Typical Brits - partially!
Weight for fruit, vegetables, food stuffs etc - metric
Money - metric
Buying material for dressmaking etc - metric
Personal height /weight - both metric and imperial - (depending on age probably!)
Distance - imperial - useless you’re an athlete - and then in meters - unless you're running a marathon of course - that’s in miles!
I could go on....😳...dread to think what will happen if we ever get Brexit sorted!
And the Hon Member for the 18th Century issued an edict for his office that imperial measures were to be used in all documents.
As a lifelong science student, school, uni, work and living in mainland Europe I haven't got a clue about rods, poles and perches - never mind pounds, feet and inches ...
Pretty much all metric in Canada now, except for our own body measurements! And recipes.
I’m better with ounces, pounds, inches and feet - but I’ll pass on the rods, poles & perches. even though hubby was a fisherman!😂🤣
The names for some of the measurements are great though. My favourite is quintal. Which according to Google is equivalent to a hundredweight, which used to be 100 lb but is now 112 (?!) or 100 kilos. Certainly doesn't contribute to clarity does it?
Especially at NASA we suspect ...
Many years ago when son was working for BR he was asked by an Egyptian colleague what is a chain and received the answer that it is the distance between the wickets on a cricket pitch. I hope that helped. 😂
Did he then have to explain cricket?
And Dead Slow Ahead or Dead Slow Astern on ships.
I think full a Stern would be my go to for docs....
