Prednisolone and kidney stones

Has anyone experience of developing kidney stones from taking Pred? I also take prescribed Adcal calcium supplement to counteract PRED side effects so not sure if this can also play a part in developing kidney stones.

More likely to be the calcium - I develop calcium grit which causes cystitis if I take calcium and don't drink enough. It can be a forerunner of stones. I know someone who developed gall stones - probably due to the calcium supplement.

Have you got kidney stones? Ouch!!!!

You are right and it was me - 8 months into GCA and pred, I got pseudo gout (left knee) and that was when they checked my calcium levels and I did not need the Adcal at all.

That was when I stopped all 'just in case' prescriptions. No0one was happy, but as I said, we deal with a problem as and when it arises.

Consultants (Rheumy and Gall Bladder) said too much calcium at that time as the Rheumy arranged calcium level test and for the Gall bladder bloke to get an x-ray. Grit in gall bladder. The Gall Bladder bloke said with a bit of luck and a fair wind it would not prove a problem. It did 6 years down the line the grit in the gall bladder coalesced and bingo 'stones and op'

Thanks. Keep telling my doctor that I don't want to take the calcium and Alendronic acid and Omeprazole to counteract the Pred but he insists I should. I'm down to 5mgs of Pred so have decided to ignore his advice. Only got pmr through having the shingles jab but that's another story.

Maybe he doesn't know you probably need the AA more for the omeprazole effects ... If you take AA you do need the calcium - probably more than if you just take pred.

Hi, l’m being investigated for Kidney Stones, l’ve had one CT but it didn’t show anything, so l’m waiting to see a Urologist for further investigation.

Do you have kidney stones?

Kind Regards

This is one of the reasons some recommend taking Vitamin K2 as it sends calcium to the bones so it is less likely to settle in places where you don't want it. Also important are magnesium and possibly Vitamin B6. Increasing intake of citrates and high fibre foods containing phytates, reducing oxalates.

Herons Vit K2 advice is really good.

The kidney stone issue can definitely have a link to increased mineral supplements like Calcium.

Do you take your Calcium at a different time to your Pred ?
