A lovely Beatles' song, but also the title of a new book by Professor of Genetics Steve Jones, who is encouraging us all to top up our vitamin D levels. See yesterday's Guardian:
I believe it is felt that low vit D can cause brain fog - though it is impossible to know if that is what contributes to brain fog in a/i disorders, i.e. is it cause or effect?
Will take you to the two articles in the Newsletter 'You are NOT Alone' written in November 2011 Page 2 and the follow up Autumn/Winter Page 7.
The people with PMR and GCA who read those Newsletters had their Vit D sorted out quite quickly and the rectifying of the problem came down from Seconday Care to Primary Care in our hospital trust area.
The odd thing was that the guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of PMR stated that Vit D deficiency should be explored as one the the criteria before confirmation of PMR.
I sincerely hope that people follow the link to the Guardian.
Me, I have taken a daily supplement since I finished the last of the 20,000 units of 1,000 units per day (£5.10p from Boots) and those levels have never come down and others whom I know have done the same.
Mind if you ate 17 fresh salmon plus 1 dozen eggs a week....................
Well we spent 8 weeks of January and February in the lovely sunshine of Lanzarote and have just some back from two weeks in Menorca. Was it the Vit D that made me feel better while I was there or was it that I was relaxed and away from any of life's day to day pressures? I certainly felt better but still had the same symptoms, pain in the hips and shoulders especially at night. I'm not convinced that Vit D is the magic wand I hope it could be but I'm happy to keep trying to get more sunshine in my life. Now it's time to look for another break in the sun for October and also book Lanzartote again for Jan/Feb 2020😎
I have a friend who lives in a beautiful, but cool and rainy corner of Yorkshire, but spends most of the winter every year in Spain. One way or another she and her partner certainly benefit from this annual break, but I don't know how big a part is played by the vitamin D level. Sadly for me, I just can't afford to have a long-term break in the sun each year.
Three weeks in South African sunshine left me feeling brighter than for a long time - relaxation in warmth as much as vitamin D perhaps - also breathing purer air! Enjoy your holidays to come!
Vitamin D MUST be taken with co-factors magnesium and Vit K. There are some who believe that the Vit D deficiency is likely more linked to actual Magnesium deficiency.
I absolutely think that my PMR was brought on by prolonged stress (physical and emotional) AND Vit D deficiency.
I always tanned really easily - never needed to eat sunblock (olive skin) - I now (after Pred) burn very quickly!
I currently take Nature's Best Osteoguard Ultra which contains calcium, vitamin D3, magnesium and vitamin K2. What annoys me is that I had to find out about the importance of including magnesium and K2 for myself i.e. through this forum. The supplement that my rheumy originally prescribed for me contained calcium and D3 but not the others. I've always been pale but not so that I burn particularly easily.
