Some interesting research into quantity of ASDs and stroke/cardiovascular risks might be worth considering for us?

medscape.org/viewarticle/91...

The bits I found interesting:

“The results reinforce similar associations from other recent studies and add a novel finding: The group with the highest consumption had an 81% elevated risk for small artery occlusion”

We don’t want our small arteries impinged anymore!

“Saccharin, acesulfame-potassium, or stevia and saccharin have been associated with weight gain and increased adiposity, and saccharin and aspartame have been linked to impaired glucose homeostasis and hyperinsulinemia.”

Yup, we bang on about this a lot! If you’re trying to lose weight, don’t substitute with sweeteners; your body will still release insulin, and insulin lays down fat and prevents its use as energy. Reduce initiation of insulin, get the fat used for energy and lose weight 😊

“Recent research showed that ASBs can cause glucose intolerance in mice by changing gut microbiota and can cause dysbiosis and glucose intolerance in humans.”

This may contribute to the leaky gut theories??? Which I’m slowly coming round to 😉 We all need a healthy gut biome to enhance general health, promote digestion and absorption of nutrients via the good bacteria.

Certainly food for thought.

Good one!!

But I shall continue with zero tonic for my G. Though I have to confess, Fentiman's tonic hits the spot - less sugar and no cr*p...

May I be cheeky and ask what is your 'G'

😱

I hope it's not what I think. 😀

Nothing exciting - Gordons usually unless something better is on offer in the local supermarket ;) OH draws the line at 40+ euros for the South Tirol finest ...

Thank you for the link I will stand over my OH while he reads this. He has been a sugar junkie all his life! Some years ago he was diagnosed with pre diabetes, we changed his eating habits and he started using what a friend of ours called “fat pills, only fat people use them therefore it must be the pills that are making them fat” he was joking but it would appear that he was right . OH’s weight has been very slowly increasing ever since but blood sugar remains normal. The fat pills are going in the bin.

I hope this does the trick. Do feedback the results.

I bought my hubby the DiabetesWeight Loss cookbook by the Caldesis. He’s not got any blood sugar problems, but is having difficulty losing weight (which he needs to do as BP has gone up). As well as nice recipes, the front section describes their stories and outlines the science and plans. Hubby nearly understood it 😂😂😂😂

I read once aspartame was an appetite enhancer. So never drank diet drinks. At last SOMETHING I don't have to give up!

Diet drinks cause a massive flare of my IBS now I know why.

This research info is proving useful! Glad I shared it now. (Was in two minds, it’s a bit ‘boring’ but it’s these titbits that help I think).

Yes, in effect they are! They cause the release of insulin, but no sugar to metabolise. High insulin/low sugar = hunger. This is why the low carb high fat diet satiates and hunger goes.

Oh Lord. I have thoughtlessly taken artificial sweeteners for years. Stopping right now.

My brother in law used to go out and buy his own supply of pop when he visited because I simply never thought of getting any in for him and never bought it for ourselves. He is the only member of his immediate family who has had a heart problem, needing a stent. He gave up the soda pop habit when this happened to him. I've always suspected the coke and pepsi, etc was implicated. High pop consumption is also connected to stroke and cancer.

I’m lucky, can’t stand the taste, intensely sweet and then an indescribable nasty after taste. I can taste them in anything. It’s reduced my bottled drinks choices to........water since the ‘sugar tax’ alterations to the ingredients. But when I was in the Polish shop last week, I noticed many of their drinks are made with sugar rather than sweeteners. DiL said diet foods are very uncommon in Poland. (And they’re rather partial to rhubarb drinks which makes a nice ‘tarty’ change)

Plus both my boys would get hyper with aspartame when young, scrutinised all labels and avoided like the plague. I don’t think either of them drink them still nearly 30 years later.

Almost impossible to get "diet" drinks here in Italy. Diet tonic appears once a year on the shelves of our village supermarket! I can't stand the taste of normal tonic and don't have too many G&Ts anyway so I doubt the amount will kill me! I detest the sweetened/flavoured waters too. A friend criticises me for drinking fizzy water - that's my answer to sugars and sweetners.

When you’re stuck with ‘just’ water, it’s surprising how different they can taste! I too like fizz occasionally, completely different taste, and apparently a more acidic pH, so watch for tooth decay in kids.

Sweetened flavoured water 🤢🤮 Why? Just why?

Exactly! A slice of lemon is more than enough. Living in the world of mineral waters is quite an education - each water tastes different and it makes a difference if the version is lightly, moderately or very sparkling. Some French ones are disgusting - is it Badoit I'm thinking of?
