Artificial sweetener Sucrolose/ Splenda linked to leaky gut and worse.

I have used this stuff in tea for years .

Research has shown links with leaky gut syndrome. It apparently interferes with DNA and can lead to an increase in cardiovascular events. I thought I would share this as most of us are watching our weight. Full article in Medscape which is worth subscribing to, lots of relevant information.

Thanks for this Jane , I can’t drink a warm drink unless it’s sweet, tastes revolting, I love a cup of tea so I’d changed to sweeteners .

Love sugar but it gives me Candida and a bloated stomach, I guess that’s leaky gut from what I’ve been reading . On a strict regime and occasionally take the chance and use Fluconazole, interactions are potentially scary, but did have some prescribed by the GP. She said it’s very unusual if you’re over 60 but common if immune compromised.

You can’t win .

That's really interesting, especially the linked article from your link, on Leaky Gut Syndrome. I have been using artificial sweetners for years, in granulated form, originally on my breakfast cereal (I go without now), in coffee and more recently, in my stewed rhubarb which I eat several times a week. I used to use Candarel, which is aspartame, then I read bad things about that so switched to sucralose (Splenda). I have been getting regular diarrhoea for years, with no pain, about once a week in the mornings. By lunchtime it stops then I'm constipated in the evening. The GP's answer is that it's just me, but she is getting me tested for coeliac. Unlikely since I'm now on a low carb diet and it hasn't improved.

I take prebiotics every day and that seems to help. I eat plenty of greens but that doesn't.

So I'm now thinking of switching to Truvia (Stevia). I've tried it before and didn't find it sweet enough though.

You would not believe where you will find wheat in food and enough to upset a coeliac gut!!! Some ketchups, Worcester sauce, soy sauce, many many pre=prepared foods - I w=could write an essay!!!!!!

I don't eat any of those sauces as I don't like vinegar. Fingers crossed then for a negative result. I thought the diarrhoea might be related to the AA I'm on, but after a month, the diarrhoea is better, but not gone completely, so the GP says I have to take it while I'm on pred.

I saw that article a few days ago and it’s fascinating. I’m very wary of any artificial sweeteners. My partner has just had major surgery to remove 80cm of small bowel because of severe inflammation for no apparent reason and no identified cause…but for the last 2 years since the severe pain, bloating and severe diarrhoea started, I noticed that everything was aggravated by use of sweeteners. I don’t use them at all but my partner would use for cereal, drinks, etc and always bought zero sugar drinks. The zero sugar drinks, jams etc are packed with sweetener. I spoke to the consultant last week and he said he would ban all sweeteners because of the effect on the gut microbiomes and it’s taking a long time for research to identify the links. Of course, the sweetener industry is massive and influential, much like big Pharma. You need to check labels for hidden sweeteners in food too. I can’t find a cranberry juice without sweetener.

Pure cranberry. Wildly expensive but does exist

Thanks. Unfortunately Ocado don’t deliver here, so I can’t order it. I’d rather pay a bit more for something I like. I’ll look online and see if Amazon stock it.

Brilliant. I’ve found it on Amazon and the biona online shop. Thank you. I love cranberry with a splash of fever tree tonic over ice 😁

It is quite infuriating the way be are duped by products for years. I have bought Stevia ( billed as a completely natural sweetener) from Holland and Barrett in a dropper bottle. A couple of drops makes my tea palatable. There’s a lot about tea that is a comfort habit. Therefore you want it the same. My digestive system has gone to pot, maybe it’s not the drugs but my cup of tea.

There’s a growing awareness of the links between gut microbiomes and good health. It may sound dramatic but I tend to treat any sweetener as poison.

Do you use sugar? Some things, like rhubarb, would be difficult to eat without it.

When my friend developed type 2 diabetes she was told to sweeten things with honey or apple puree.

Yes but I use billingtons unrefined molasses sugar rather than the poisonous white granulated stuff. Partner was just below diabetic range so sugar has been watched carefully. Having lost 4.5 stone in less than 28 months it’s less of a concern!

Molasses sugar has sweetness and flavour and you can use less. Honey is an alternative but it has to be real and not the EU blend which is minimal honey and mainly imported Chinese ‘honey’ I buy honey only from the Latin American honey shop online. Most supermarket honey is sweet syrup. It’s another huge scam.

It wasn’t intentional! It was gut inflammation causing malnutrition. In the last month there’s been two iron infusions, phosphorus and mMg supplement, low potassium B12 injection and 4 x daily liquid meals to try and get some calories in. Hopefully bowel resection has resolved and rest of gut and stomach is healthy but it’s going to be a long recovery.

Ooh, my best wishes to him. That must've been tough, but hopefully he is now pain free and on the mend.

Some people don't have a sweet tooth. Feel almost embarrassed to admit it but, er, well, i eat lemon. I drink a lot of Lapsang with lemon and while I'm at it I cut a hunk off the lemon and eat that too, usually including the peel (unwaxed, organic). Said to contain many nutrients but mostly because it's greatly refreshing.

~Absolutely spot on - add lemon juice/peel/pith/ to my porridge every day & pop the same in my herbal tea pot at night.

Same goes into my stir fry some nights - my Meyer lemon tree is laden presently so I am feeling very blessed :)

Strawberries with rhubarb. If rhubarb young enough the strawberries are enough to do without sugar

Strawberries go well with gooseberries too!

artificial sweeteners are dangerous. When given to ants, it killed them! Dump them!
