Tapering Pred - Blood Glucose Levels

OH takes his Pred early morning and is now 12.50 working to 10 however his blood sugar levels pre breakfast andthroughout morning/early afternoon are showing the same random levels as when he was on 25mg daily - would it be expected for them to be lower?

Pre evening meal levels have been steady now at between 5 and 6 for a while.

Has been taking sweetener in coffee and cut out biscuits, cakes, jam and honey butties.

Hi,

Not necessary as yet...but hopefully they will stabilise as he gets lower.

As you are testing at home, I guess you’ve discussed with GP, and at the moment is not too worried. Or was he diabetic pre Pred?

OH may find the transition from 12.5mg to 10mg (although a recognised taper) a little difficult, some do. So just watch for any niggles occurring. Might be better to try 12.5 - 11.25 - 10mg if you only have 2.5mg tablets. So long as uncoated, can be cut. Or request 1mg, he going to need them soon anyway.

Lowering of the spikes of glucose is expected as the dose goes down but sometimes it doesn't happen apparently.

How has his Hba1c been? Can't remember - is he on any medication?

No medication.

This was my previous query and you made a helpful reply

Just wondered. Has the GP been happy otherwise?

He doesn't see GP very often - one of the men who don't like Drs., hospitals etc.

I relay info from here and other forum plus following up links etc.

Hello, I didn’t see much change in my body’s exaggerated response to carbs until I was about 3mg. Last year when I was around 5mg I assumed I’d be better with it. No, hardely even went back to a ‘normal’ and the pounds went on. After a month I slunk back to my very low carb diet. I attribute the gain on spikes in insulin in response to the raised blood sugars. Still now on 2.5mg I can get away with the odd thing extra if I’m active afterwards and still don’t have any potato, rice, pasta, bread etc.

Has he had an HbA1c test recently?

As a Type 2 diabetic I was fine and well controlled until the arrival of Pred. Then the blood sugars shot up and I was on insulin until I finally lowered the Pred enough to be back on tablets. It took a long time though and not until I was at about 3-4 mg. like all things with PMR patience is the key
