Oh takes his pred between 5 & 6 am (both of us getting up for loo)

Being a nightowl his breakfast is some hours later, any time between 10 and 11.30.

Example readings

Pre pred 6.8 pre breakfast 9.6

Pre pred 7.3 pre breakfast 11.1

Sorry no dates or timings but does give an idication re the action of pred since he retreats back to bed after taking it.

Doesn’t it just. Does he take a snack with it?

Sugar free? Some are quite sugary and if it is, he’s got the Pred effect on top.

"Lite"

Pred definitely raises BG by itself. Mine can raise by up to 5 points if I take pred a few hour prior to pre breakfast test rather than when I wake. That said I would be asking for gastric resistant pred so yoghurt can be stopped and not contribute to high.the occasionally 11 is fine but if it is often that high on a morning it's not good. I would be interested to know what oh pre pred test would say if done at 5am say.

The pre Pred are close to 5a.m. - certainly not after 6 then breakfast a few hours after.

Pre lunch (early Afternoon) average for past two weeks is 8.8 and be evening meal average is 5.49

Cheers. Its interesting as no one really explains it all properly - pred, pmr, diabetes/increased blood sugar. I had basically self managed since 2001. Once pred started I begged to go on insulin but it took Dr 8 months to refer me. The diabetes clinic were very helpful and supportive but discharged now.

Out of interest what is his dose of pred please?

I am type 2 and I take my pred at 8am with breakfast. Pre breakfast my sugars are in the 5s and go up to 7/8 at 12 noon and don't go down until about 4pm. They are back in the 5s by 5pm.

Hi I would be very happy with those results. About a two point increase is probably okay. Mine (on insulin) can shift more than that. In fact I don't take insulin if BG 5 or less. Just Metformin with my meal.

I went up to 9mg of pred for a week which spiked sugars even more and caused my macular oedema to worsen. I have dropped back to 5.5 and now tapering to 4.5mg to see if it helps the macular oedema. I also have a very low carb lunch (if anything) to try to avoid spiking higher.

The diabetes nurse was very supportive about things like that. She basically said anyone who can maintain a stable BG is doing wonders on pred. I have just added duloxetine to the mix and everything gone up be 2points again.

It is so difficult. The only way I can think of to stop the spikes is to try and drop steroids down and to have a bigger breakfast and no lunch or very little carbs

in reply toKoalajane

If you eat eggs and cheese a nice omlette should be good lunch. If you are a meat eater (I am not) then steamed fish or chicken with a salad shouldn't spike.

That is my usual dinner. I am at work for lunch so try to have very little for lunch (cheese, tomato, nuts) and then dinner at about 5 pm. I am on a low carb, high fat diet and no medication for the diabetes.

Hi...I wanted to ask since you are eating low carbs...do you have any fruit or grainy bread..meet me explain why I am asking...I did low carb a couple of years ago and lost a big chunk of weight fast In trying to keep things balanced at that time I had one piece of bread with nutbutter (cashew....I could bathe in it...lol) in the am with coffee. Then I tried to eat fruit once a day. The rest was veggies and protein. Now with the prednisone and PMR I don't know if I should go that route or skip that attempt at some balance. With the pred it might not work. What do you think? I have gained weight and my.face is gigantic n it's hard to look in a mirror.....oh well. Thanks. Be well.

We usually say to limit fruit and bread, whatever it is, is carbs. Everyone is different in how much carb they can get away with - if you don't lose weight you are eating more than you should/need. A food diary, a scales and google will be very useful working out your carb intake.

I do have 1 slice of low carb bread for breakfast, no lunch and then evening meal is usually a salad with tomatoes and avocados. If I eat fruit it is blueberries
