GERD or not GERD that is the question?

Well five weeks on from shoulder joint replacement op on Christmas Day (!), following fall on 19th December I am starting to slowly see some small improvement.

Bowels problems eliminated since stopping copious continued pain meds.

What is still troubling me is my stomach. On my second day in hospital I projectile vomited coffee bean blood. It was sudden following a sudden strong metallic taste and searing burning in the throat seconds before vomiting. It was quite a bit, narrowly missing the need for a blood transfusion. I had emergency endoscopy since they thought ulcer, trauma, or tear in throat.

The endoscopy was inconclusive but ruled out anything nasty. My op scheduled for following day was cancelled, since I was too high risk due to unexplained vomiting episode. A second endoscopy was performed and the bleed was put down to acid reflux, GERD. I was put on Lansoprazol.

I then read a post on here suggesting a connection between Lansoprazol and Osteoporosis. (Osteoporsis was found present in my shoulder). Someone had suggested Ranitidine instead. So I asked GP for this and have just started taking it.

I went to GP though because over the course of a few hours the area under my diaphragm expands and becomes hard. This happens whether I eat or not. It becomes so enlarged and uncomfortable I get middle back pain. I can't sit at this stage, as it feels so tight I think my body will literally explode, so I have to lay down. After I have laid down the swelling and hardness reduce. When I get up the cycle begins again.

So my question is, is this GERD related? Has anyone experienced similar symptoms and had a different diagnosis?

Any ideas?

How awful for you - has the Lansoprazol/Ranitidine helped? Hope you get to know what the problem is sooner rather than later. Pleased you got the surgery eventually. Let us know how you get on with the stomach problem.

I do think that long term Pred. Use is having an adverse effect on our digestive system. I am gradually becoming accustomed to making various adjustments to what I can and can’t eat. I also experience mild oesophageal spasms if I swallow something in haste without enough liquid. It is not as severe as you are experience but it is there.
