What a faff it is!..What a bloody mystery! ..Even the sodding Christmas cards which were taken down today! Bits of sparkle, tinsel & God knows what on loads of them!..Is this ok or does it ruin a lorry load!! See through plastic windows on the envelopes!! Are they ok!.. Different coloured plastics on the top of the bottles!..Is tin or aluminium foil ok!! Margarine & yoghurt tubs!!! Rest my Case.......Citizen Pepperdoggie. (Not My Fault)
Some charity type groups who used to take Christmas Cards and cut out motifs to make cards to sell the next year have ceased as it was possible that they were breaking copyright.
Must admit I leave the windows in envelopes and often leave labels on various conainers.
My first rant of the year Nuff.... But it's all so woolly it irks me..... I've sorted stuff out gone down my local recycling place & ended up putting them in the same skip! The wasted hours most of us spent doing this stuff to no good purpose.
Hi Pepper,it is a problem,but l always put foil and tin in my recycling bin,l think yoghurt pots and margarine tubs are O K,the main thing is always put clean things in the bin anything not washed can mess it all up .l am sure that you know this anyway.Love the flowers,can’t wait for warmer weather to get out in the garden again.All the best for a happy and healthy 2019.
Daffs just breaking through here. Have you got one of the early flowering January varieties! It's cold clay here & a bit of a frost pocket, so often later, even the one's in pots. Bluebells & snowdrops pushing through & red Hellebore in flower.
Am a very casual but enthusiastic gardener. Plant and expect to grow. Does more often than not. Poor soil, so much in containers.Communal garden, but am only 1 interested. I covered everything this winter, but when I peeped, yesterday, I see all the delphs have had it. Daffs always cheerful, so come on....do your stuff....bloom!
Delphs die right back over Winter you may be ok with them! Most hardy perennials are ok with frost. Better with fresh air circulating I always think!.. I love em but the slugs murder them here!

Haha funny PD. You crack me up. I’m with you. I’m terrified to take the rubbish out in case some eagle eye spots me putting ....shock horror .... paper or card in the wrong bin. I reckon I’d be lynched It’s fab to recycle but it’s become such a hot potato. Xxx
Yes we put it all in the right bin ,rinsed and sorted ,Then when the bins are full because we have a fortnightly collection now ,We are told to put it in all the same bin ,
Since they gave us the big blue bin instead of a a box for glass plastic and tins I just bung it in. Not even cleaned. I only separate glass and take metal lids off. They sort it wash it and burn what’s not recycling. I think it keeps people in a job so I am doing my bit to keep unemployment figures down and contributing to the community. The bin police don’t have time to route through them unless someone has see you put a cat in it.
Estelle. Smelly cat or doggie droppings (etc) are quite effective in putting off the bin police!!
Good will was lost in Birmingham last year when the bin collectors went on strike & recycling was more or less abandoned as the rubbish & fly tipping piled up in the streets!
The free green collection which had been successful for years was curtailed a couple of years earlier & a charge imposed which again resulted in fly tipping.
Queueing at the local tip results in traffic chaos & a gallon of petrol burnt!
There seems to be no recognition for the increase of fly tipping and the reduction in bin collections by local authorities? We lived in Germany for years and there was never a problem with rubbish. They had an ideal system we should adopt if only the local authorities could afford it. Every one could contribute to help this happen like charging a Council Tax or something similar???
Something has to be done! It surely costs more to continually have to clear fly tipping both household & commercial & it's a nightmare in country lanes not far away. Special one street collections for large items were also effective but have stopped here.
The government signed up to all these reduction targets but has no clear strategy how to go about it other than pass the parcel to local councils who have no money or waste it!!
Once an area goes down it gets worse & worse with stuff dumped on stuff.
Ordinary litter is bad enough but some of the substances or items are dangerous! Used needles for example which we discussed on the forum some time back!
They do start early though - Kindergarten children know all about recycling and it rubs off on the parents. Plus, as here where I live, the less is put into your general rubbish bags the less it costs you. We have to collect rubbish bags in person and pay for them We recycle everything we can to save - it's almost a game! Every carpark has the bell things for paper, metal and glass as well as random ones all over the place - no excuses.
Use to be like that here too! Every big store,car park,local facility etc had these recyclying places. Almost totally gone in my city now!... Bunged up in debt like most councils since the financial crash they have shut all these outlets down!
They are going to strike again in Brum. We don't live too far from Lifford, so back on the old web cam to see when the queues are not too long☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️
Yes, it’s definitely confusing! I’m lucky in that I’ve landed up in an area which leaves a card at the start of December with all the collection dates for the next year by colour bin, with lists on the back of what can go in each bin. I stick it inside one of the kitchen cupboards - and then of course often forget to check it!
It can still go wrong though even with that: paper, card, glass and batteries in green bin. Simple? No, the egg box is always rejected and I would honestly have thought that was some sort of papier-mâché. Who knew...
I try my best but I do remember that one flight lasting over 3 hours wipes out the carbon saved by recycling. This was some Swedish research. Why can’t the rules be simple and the same colour bins be adopted everywhere. I think some of this is a new form of Puritanism, we can only cut down on plastics so much.
Spot on Sally. Totally agree with you. We are at the end of the food manufacturing & distribution chain. How much choice do we have on packaging etc. It's barmy ! But somehow it's our fault & responsibility to fulfill some magical recycling requirement.
Yes I believe there is some young movement in Sweden that encourages people to give up plane travel. All these bigwigs flying round the world to attend conferences on climate change!! You could n't make it up!!
I do find that washing out tins and yoghurt pots very time consuming,also ready meal packaging which can be really messy.lt was far easier when everything went into one bin.ln our area we do get information leaflets telling us what to recycle,but any increase in council tax would be very unpopular as it is going to be increased this year anyway for extra policing and care for the elderly,the council tax is already double that paid by some areas in Hertfordshire,areas much nicer than mine,which is very annoying!! Plastic is a real problem ,at least my local supermarket is providing brown paper bags for their loose products now.l remember when l was growing up the grocer always wrapped bacon and cheese in grease proof paper ,with dark blue paper bags for sugar etc.Oh well,onwards and upwards as uncle Mark would say !

Dark blue bags for sugar! And Mr Wright, our local grocer, just tipped the sugar scoop, picked up the paper, twisted and flipped and there it was - a dark blue bag without a grain spilt. Talk about stirring up memories, Grants...
We are told not to include plastic bottle tops and then you see someone on TV saying always include them we can use them. How do we know? I too have heard that contamination means the whole load is wasted, seems improbable I would have thought most loads would have something it shouldn't in it.
We need a national system and consistancy. Can you see it happening?
It doesn't seem to matter what colour of politician we have in power in this country they couldn't organise the most basic proverbial in a brewery!

What!!! Those one's with the plastic coating!! Blimey that'll save some space in one of the others!...... Are the soup tins with the inner plastic coating ok too!
If it helps any, NYC just started banning foam food containers - cups and meal boxes. Restaurants can't buy them and manufacturers can't sell them here. They say that's somewhere between 30 million and 50 million articles per week, just from our small square footage here on planet earth.
Next up, single use plastic shopping bags, plastic straws, plastic drink stirrers. The legislation has been voted in but there's a delay in implementation because so many folks object to being required to cough up $.05 per bag if they forget to bring their own. After getting the idea during a trip to Ireland long ago, I started amassing a collection of canvas and durable plastic bags for shopping. I keep them in the car. Those used for meat and fish get tossed in with the bleach laundry after use. I also have a nylon one that folds up into a tiny envelope that I keep in my purse for impulse items.
Here, we wash the trash. We always did, even before recycling. The fewer the food sources for the critters and the varmints, the better. Keeps the smells down, too.
Now, if we could just do something about disposable diaper technology...and tampon applicators.
That seems a good start for NYC. It's now 5p per single use plastic bag here, shortly to go up to 10p & there are higher priced lifetime replaceable bags available at most larger stores.
Coffee cups are difficult to recycle & the pressure is on to sort that one out!
Returnable deposits on bottles, both plastic & glass may be on the way back.
Face wipes & some cleansers are another problem being looked at!
None of it is a joined up policy from manufacture to disposal though & whose responsibility it is! It's an issue that has been ducked for years & it's getting environmentally out of control now worldwide.
Has to be sorted soon before it destroys the food chain & we're up to our necks in the stuff! ATB
We only went about one decade without deposits on bottles and cans here. We've been doing that since WWII.
NYC has a "Green Initiative", with tax breaks for solar panels and optimum Green Construction and Green Retrofits available to residents and commercial structures alike. Every city owned-building - and there are loads of them - is or has been retrofitted with green technology. Everything except special equipment like fire equipment and anti- terrorist equipment runs on electric motors including buses and all staff automobiles. Even the ferries are now fueled by LNG.
The environment is a big concern here, and measures have loads of support from taxpayers. It's a huge undertaking for a place as populated as we are, but we've seen the improvements and benefits.
