Do I see a greenhouse? We are thinking of one but have cold Winters. I am retiring but thinking of expense after it's built. Any thoughts. I would like to be out in it during winter. Gardening is one of my passions.

OH has been building my new one today together with grandson number one who is 20 years old (youthfulness helps lol). I have a small paraffin heater but did not use it in the greenhouse at our previous house, however, I plan to use it in this new one because it is bigger, will also need to wrap up warm as we live on the east coast in Lincolnshire. The only expense is paraffin but remember to leave a window or door open for ventilation. Let me know what you decide, Janet.

Hi. Yes we have two. My wife has a cacti & succulent collection in one which is single glazed & bubble wrap protected over the cold Winter months, plus an electric heater when required. The other is ok for Wintering tender plants & to start plants /seeds early. Don't know what you intend growing or how you would heat it if necessary. Hope that helps.

That is what I am figuring out still.

What is cold? And do you get lots of sun?

We can have some below zero weather lots of days in the 20s. Usually sun is good but April was unusually dreary this year. You have a greenhouse?

Um - is that below zero and 20s Fahrenheit? Chilly...

No - just a balcony now, no garden. But we had conservatories that were too hot even in the winter when there was lots of sun despite no real heating. There are very low wattage greenhouse heaters that will take the worst of the chill off but I don't know what external temps they work for.

Yes that's F. Heaters will work but it's the cost of course

Obviously - but a glasshouse might be enough to allow more sensitive plants to survive when swaddled in bubblewrap stuff? Even if they can't outside. Or a "garden room" - with a solid roof. A guy in the UK has started doing conservatories with a very lightweight insulated roof - it is amazing! Modern materials make all sorts of things possible now.
