Referral to Vet

In a remarkable show of solidarity my cat is now on prednisolone to treat an inflammatory condition (IBD). He was given a depot injection so does not have to decide how many tablets to take a day.

The vet seemed very knowledgeable on inflammatory conditions such that I’m thinking of asking for a referral.

This may have a downside however as my wife has already implied that the cat washes himself more than I do. In addition given my mood swings the idea of putting me in a pen for a week or two while she goes on holiday is starting to gain traction.

YOU could have depot injections too you know. They are mentioned in the 2015 Recommendations for the management of PMR. Just sayin'

Hi

The vet probably know more about Pred than your GP does as well. Trouble is if you go to him it could prove very expensive!

As for the washing...well best not go there! Might frightened the neighbours let alone the horses!

At least you and the cat can bond over the Pred 😹

The not pleasant news is that Pred can and does trip cats into diabetes. It happened to my cat and to mother cat's diabetes.

Can tip people into steroid-induced diabetes too

Yep, I'm battling high blood sugar, near zero carbs, to ward it off, but grandmother and mother was diabetic and it runs in her siblings, too. Don;t worry, says the doc, we can give you something for it if and when...........

To be fair the vet warned us about this but he was quite poorly so no choice really. Now much better and on a hydrolysed protein diet which we hope will allow us to manage the condition without further steroid shots.

What a humorous post. It is so important to have humor during adversity. Good for you!

Haha! That made me smile Michael - we like a bit of ‘gallows’ humour on this forum. I’d like to replace the late Rufus (despatched to the great Vet in the sky) but my wife won’t hear of it.......

Yes this our fourth black cat in a long line of rescue animals starting with the much missed "Arfur Guinness" Like you I think this will be our last.

I like the idea of ‘Black Cats’ (clue is in my forum name - if you’re into football, that is)!

I hesitate to say this but Arfur was black with a white front and was chosen by my eldest son who is a Newcastle fan. Please don’t hold this against me.

My nieces dog, a 2yr old Whippet, suddenly became ill with an auto-immune problem. She was taken to Bristol Vet Hospital and given a transfusion as her platelets were dangerously low. She was checked for cancer but that was ruled out, so she is now on steroids, 5 pills a day hidden in freshly cooked chicken, plus another pill (don't know what). She is still very tired and sleeps a lot, but her appetite has improved a lot, (know the feeling). Luckily they have pet insurance.

So sorry to hear about your nieces dog - I know how attached we get to our pets. Fingers crossed that the treatment improves things

Best wishes

Michael

You think that's support, I was diagnosed 3 weeks ago aged 53 and my father in law was diagnosed this week 80. Yours has skipped species lines, mine has skipped hereditary lines 😎 I'm watching my 3 cats very closely in case there is a collision project 😼
