Hi I’m a 63 yr old male, who’s had PMR since the end of 2015 . Before getting this annoying illness I had been a regular runner for nearly 30 years . My running has had to stop due to the hip pain . When I was first diagnosed, I started off on 20mg of Prednisone, I’m now down to 3 mg . I now feel like I could get back into running and would be grateful if any other suffers who also run could give me some advice on how to manage running with this illness

Many Thanks

Runnerman

Hello Runnerman ,l am down to 3mgs of preds, but l am afraid running a few yards for a bus is as much as l can manage. As you were so used to running before PMR,it should be easier for you,but be careful not to do too much too soon ,and l hope that running does not affect your hip too much. I hope that there are some runners on this forum who will be able to advise you,

I wonder if a physio could give you a programme of muscle building exercises to get you back on the running track again?

I am a few months behind you with PMR, you give me great hope.

Many thanks for your suggestion of a physio I will consider it. I,m glad my posting has helped also you,ve helped me in a way as I.m also in South Yorkshire and was beginning to think I was the only sufferer around here as I,ve not come across anyone else with this illness !

There are a fair few of us and a support group meeting in Ilkley in May. Good luck with your training. If you are “flush” a personal trainer is another intriguing thought. Let us know how you go.

I too was a regular runner but haven’t run since August 2016. Just celebrated my two years of this disease. I walk almost daily in fairly undulating terrain with my dog and do Pilates and yoga. Hoping to return to golf as weather warms up. I can just about cope with these activities but not sure I’ll ever get fit enough to start running again! I have so many aches and pains at times I don’t want to make them worse and I’m not so sure they aren’t as a result of all my activities in my previous life!!

Hi Lochy

Thanks for your reply, I also used to walk reqular with my dog but sadly also like a double whammy we lost her about the same time I came down with PMR. I have also wondered if a lifetime of activities has caused my current problems .

If you have not run since 2015, then it might be very hard to start again, but it is possible. I can only tell you my experience with exercise. I have started walking almost immediately after being diagnosed with PMR. Month later I started swimming and month after I added mountain biking. I have carefully increased distance and effort on both and within 1 year I was back to pre-PMR fitness. But I made mistake to not start running as soon as I should have. After about 2 years, I thought I could try running and it turns out to be a disaster. Not only were my muscle weak, but I ended up with stretched ACL and currently I am in therapy for that. So my advice to you is, if you have not run for 2-3 years, go thru physical therapy to make sure that your legs/muscles are strong enough and then start running like you are starting for the first time in your life - walk 2-3 minuts and then jog for 30-60 seconds and do this for few weeks until you get stronger. Best to avoid problem then to try to cure it later.

Hi Runnerman,

Have a look at John Robson profile on the attached. He successfully got through PMR and is back running.

He was on this forum, but heaved heard from him lately, but you may be able to find him, and message him.

Hi. The prednisone has a detrimental effect on the Achilles’ tendon. It causes the tendon to weaken and can easily tear or rupture, as I am testimony to. Care is needed. Sue

My best advice as an ex runner would be to join your local running club , my local one is great for helping with these sort of problems!

One way to build back some muscle in a safer way is to do exercises in a warm therapy pool. The water supports the body and allows you to work without injuring yourself. The heat feels fantastic too. Although I can say that I have still overdone things of course. Here in the USA (at least some places) you can start as physical therapy and then continue on your own with the exercises they teach you.

Have a look at this

and you will also find several runners/athletes over on the patient.info forum:

He also has a section here

and is closely associated with the NE support charity. He's back climbing mountains.
