I love the lead apron at the dentist...maybe I would love this too! Let us know how it works!

I will. I have it wrapped around my shoulders at the moment, like a shawl. Feels comforting.

I made one for my daughter when she was six. She used it until she left for college and recently asked for it back. I also prefer older blankets with weight, rather than the newer ones advertised as "lightweight but warm". The weight just feels good. I use weighted lap pads and proprioceptive vests (snug) with some of preschool students who have autism. It centers them somehow and makes them more available to learn.

Good job you!

If it runs you got please let us know. I like heavier quilt but find heat too much so then have 1tog quilt to swap it. If a weighted blanket doesn't make you too hot it might be solution. 👀

The blanket itself is thin, but weighted... I have been wearing it as a shawl this afternoon and not feeling hot just comfy! We shall see how tonight goes! I'll let you know.

So we are all different! I have to kick the weight of all but a thin cotton blanket and sheet off my legs or my feet start to hurt! I use a hot water bottle to keep warm. But I wonder if something like this would help one of my sons who has been doing research on anxiety, which I think is his way of telling me he has problems.

I have suffered with panic and anxiety attacks since the birth of my daughter, 40 years ago! It is a very real disorder and has been dibilitating, at times. Here is the belief; " Weighted blankets help ground your body during sleep by pushing it downwards. This process, known as “earthing” or “grounding,” may have a deeply calming effect. The blankets also simulate deep pressure touch (DPT), a type of therapy that uses firm, hands-on pressure to reduce chronic stress and high levels of anxiety.12 Apr 2017"

Like swaddling

Thanks for that, Mamaici. I've found a Canadian version, and also have been told someone local actually makes them, though I'd need to know more. Would we have to buy two, I wonder? One for his own flat and one for here, where he lately has been spending 25-30% of his time?

in reply to HeronNS

Perhaps buying two is the best option... I did see several on Etsy and was intrigued by having it handmade by an individual, but in the end I went with a company who makes them for children and adults; seems to have strong ethical ethos and offered different options. Also the weight is supposed to correspond to your body weight so I trusted their recommendation.

They are supposed to help with anxiety as well. Grounding is a good word, better than "centering" that I used earlier. Deep pressure that's gentle, like the blanket or a bear hug is wonderful. Swaddling is a good analogy. My daughter needed to be swaddled longer than most babies or she couldn't sleep, so I shouldn't be surprised that she liked the weighted blanket. Weight is supposed to be no more than 10% for my students.

Are these available in the UK, it sounds like an American idea!

in reply to Maryis80

I am in the UK and ordered from senso-rex.com/en/, they are in Poland. It was pricey, but I am sure there are other versions on Amazon or made independently.

I made a weighted blanket for my grandson who had difficulty sleeping (10 years old). Now my other grandchildren are asking for one as well!

When I read your post, it poked at my memory that I recently had experienced a weighted blanket. When was that? Oh, yeah..when I had my biopsy, my oxygen level dropped and I started to get anxious. One of the things they did to help was to put a weighted blanket on me. I did find it comforting. I may have to give some thought to this as a sleep aid. Look forward to hearing your experience with it.

THANK YOU! I had totally forgotten about that and really, it didn't even occur to me that I could purchase a weighted blanket -- and that it might help with sleep. The things you learn on this forum is priceless!

Looking forward to hearing how you get on with this. Sounds interesting.

Having looked at how they are made I am sorry we got rid of my dad's lead shot he used to make lead weights for fishing. That would have made good weights stitched into blanket.

Would have been perfect!
