Patrick, Prednisone as all drugs carry side effects however we are prescribed them because the benefits outweigh the risks. Prednisone will cause weight gain and water retention. It will cause you to have a huge appetite and if the dosage is high like 60mg as usual dose prescribed for GCA it can cause you to feel jumpy and irritated. My mind raced and sleep is interrupted. I acquired the chipmunk cheeks and the hump on my back and my waist disappeared. But my inflammation came down and I have been off prednisone in remission for 1 year and 3 months. The risk of a stroke or blindness by not taking prednisone was not a risk I wanted to take. I am a pharmacist so I totally know the risk. Hope this has helped.
