Hello again Daveibiza, I hope the sun is shining where you are.

Isn't Lycopene basically tomatoes?

Wouldn't you be better chopping a load of beautiful Spanish tomatoes with some herbs and having it with a bit of pasta perhaps. 😉

Prepared to be corrected.

Hello Jane. Yes plenty of fresh vegetables here. And lots of bright red Tomatoes. According to scientist men need about 2 kilo a day to get sufficient lycopene for the prevention of prostate problems. ( I have enlarged prostate ) so I think the only way is to eat the tomatoes yes and eat plenty of the food the

Mediterranean diet has to offer here but supplement the lycopene. Yes the sun is shining now and soon I’m going to the beach for paella lunch. Such a hard life

Ha ha. Yes I’m trying to enjoy each. I do have to fly back to the UK often for my family and business so not as idilic as it seems to others

Yeh yeh Dave, we believe you.

Seriously take care. This disease is no picnic, even in paradise.

Yes a difficult disease hope you are coping with it ok. I’ve not really ever had an illness so came as a shock. But life has to go on. Do what we can. Never give up and stay strong

Thanks Dave. I think this disease hits people, who have always expected a great deal from themselves, very hard. From reading the posts for a year or so, I think that is the common denominator.

Hello, I'm never sure whether large doses of anything is good because the body is so complicated and good at it's job. Preferring to eat lots in my diet because nutirients usually need other things to work with for good absorption or it is in a form the body likes. Just because there isn't any note about interactions etc. doesn't mean to say there aren't any; it may just be it hasn't been researched. According to James Wong in his book How to Eat Better, even lycopene in four tablespoons a day of tomato purée showed increases in measured beneficial results. Mind you, some on here say they avoid nightshade related plants so the tomato thing would be out for them. It's impossible to know whether the benefits outweigh the down side either, so there's probably no definitive answer.

I thought Lycopene was tomato extract. They do say you should not take nightshades with pred, although I do eat tomatoes and ignore the advice. Why do you want to take it?

I have high strength lycopene 50 mg. I have a years supply but not taken any as yet. I need it for prostate health.

Shows excellent results for prevention of prostate cancer and general prostate Heath care. Maybe I’ll do some research before I take them

I hate to say this but I think you may be wasting your money. I believe the April 2015 edition of Prostrate was none too happy about it either!

There is no evidence of interactions - but then, there is no evidence it works in anything either! I shall stick to tomatoes...

Having read your further posts you might want to read the Side Effects page in particular where it says:

Prostate cancer: Developing laboratory research suggests lycopene might worsen established prostate cancer by increasing the spread of cancer without having any effect on cancer cell growth. Until more is known, avoid lycopene if you have a prostate cancer diagnosis.

And I think I would listen to things said on WebMD before believing the manufacturers of the supplements.

The study piglette refers to is discussed here in understandable terminology:
