Since having my gallbladder removed I have developed IBS which I have never had before. Saw Surgeon yesterday and he said it does affect some people like this and to cut out fat and meat and chicken. Fish and healthy eating and it should go in about 6 months. Has anyone else had this after op ?

Hi,
Some do. When you had a gall balder you had a squirty bag of bile ready for a quick drop of digestive juices when the fatty foods came along. The liver kept it topped up by dripping it in slowly. Then for whatever reason, you got stones for example, the bag got blocked. Now there is no bag and your bile has to come direct from the liver which may not be as quick in some people than others. You could try pre-meal lemon juice drink that is usually suggested to avoid indigestion as it stimulates the digestive process and hopefully the liver will perk up in response. Normally eating food gets this going but in many it is a bit slow to react. Try Googling lemon juice for indigestion or find posts on indigestion where it crops up. Or any small apparetif or appetiser to wake up your system before the main event.
So rather than IBS, you probably just don't have the same unbundance of fat breaking digestive juices you once had, then didn't have and now have less of on demand.
Hi SnazzyD, thank you for your reply, it's not indigestion, it's having to run to the loo, unexpectedly and immediately. I thought it was too much bile causing this ? I will google the lemon juice drink tho, and when you say aperitif do you mean something like Vodka Martini ? 🤗🤗🤗 feeling hopeful !
Could a number of things. My observation as a nurse has been whenever people's intestines and organs associated with it are handled or been monkied around with, it can make the gut go on strike or be overactive. Can take weeks to settle. Might be too much bile going into to small intestine too quickly because your storage vessel has gone. My guess is tha too much might be an irritant as it is so alkaline.
Might be not enough bile. If you are not digesting fats properly, can make the poo (look away if squeamish) gassy and/or a bit frothy, extra smelly. After flushing there is sometimes a thin slick that catches the light or a thin scum of undigested oils.
Might be worth speaking to a doc. They might even decide to give you some calming meds to damp down the contractions in the gut. Need to check you're absorbing properly and that your fluids and salts are ok if it is very frequent.
I had gall bladder removed in Nov 2015, I then ran into problems.......many of them and found other people who had problems after the same op (not all of them - just some of them) ...........back and forward to Consultant , till a new Consultant said:
I cannot prescibe this on the NHS and it is expensive (he was not wrong either) but VSL#3............. it worked wonders...............
Yeo Valley Organic Pro-biotic Yoghurt, which has L_acidophilus on the carton, it has a short life as it contain the live good bacteria.
Anti-biotics kill bacteria, they kill the good ones as well as the baddies, you need to replace the goodies as fast as possible.
We learn the hard way and if I had my way, I would ask every medic to tell people to replace the 'goodies' after finishing any course of anti-biotics.
Lemon Juice
Take 1 unwaxed lemon, put in microwave for 1 minute (triple the juice), squeeze, divide into three of four (depending on how many main meals you eat. Take in a little water about 5-10 minutes before eating.
Thank you Sambucca, will try xx
