PRED and C. Difficile.........

Hello all you lovely people. Last Friday, 3 Feb, I was rushed to hospital for uncontrollable vomiting and diarrhoea. At midnight, in A &E, a nurse said Happy Birthday. What a way to celebrate my 70th!!

After 2 moves to other wards, in isolation, it was discovered that I had C. Diff. Up until my admission, I was on 3 mg Pred. I was in A &E for about 10 hours, but monitored constantly, and had to have a catheter. When the drip stopped the vomiting, I asked a nurse if she would ask the dr. if I could take my Pred, which I had in my bag, under the bed. She said she didnt know about that and flounced off. Previously, this same wicked witch said she wondered what I was doing in A.&E, as I wasn't vomiting/diarrhoea. I was too sick to reply, but wondered about the Pred and Warfarin.

At 6.30am, I moved to Acute Medical Unit, isolated.A consultant and dr. both said Norovirus. I thought it was food poisoning, from the night before, at home.Endless tests and 5mg Pred. 2 days later, moved to another ward, isolated and 10mg Pred.

Gastro dr came to see me and said I had C. Diff. Started antibiotic Metronidazole.

Came home Wed. night. Cleaning process 3 hours .Bed midnight. My discharge letter made no mention of how/when I should return to 3mg Pred, so I have decided to stay on that dosage, until the anti-bi finishes 20 Feb. Although I had been on 3mg, for a few months, prior, I wasn't very 'comfortable' with it, as some scalp tenderness/headaches were returning.

The drs asked me if I had been on anti-bi, prior to this. I had been in another hospital, in Nov. for COPD,and I wonder if the 2 were connected? I still think the vomiting was food poisoning, because diarrhoea is the usual symptom for C. Diff.

Having said the above, a dear old gentleman, from my church, had been very seriously ill, around the same time I took ill, last Nov, and when I saw him in Jan, he didn't look at all well, yet. I THINK he said he had had sepsis? I wonder if that was related to my condition/? i WOULD never mention that.

In 2 weeks time, I will be seeing my Neuro...the 1 who is expecting me to be on zero!!

Boy, is he in for a surprise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ps I am not allowing anybody in my bungalow, until 20 Feb, nor am I going out. I even have 'no entry' on my doors, and the reason.

Well, that's off my chest, so I will now go and have some soup for supper.

Nothing much to say there except "Get well soon and belated happy birthday!"

What a lovely way to turn 70!!!! NOT!!!!!

C.diff often occurs in patients who have been on antibiotics in the previous 3 months - that is why they asked that. The American College of Gastroenterology says vomiting may occur. and it sounds as if they tested you - they have quick tests nowadays.

Did they suggest taking probiotics once you have finished taking the antibiotic?

Thank you PMRpro. No, nothing suggested. I was terribly ill with first 3 days of anti-bi, and begged them to either change or stop. Neither, of course, happened. Once home, I read the note from pharmacist, on the box, and it states to be taken with food and a full glass of water. Would've been nice if it was mentioned!

Yes - and if the nursing staff had checked the data sheet for the instructions! I know people who have had real fights to get their medication at the time it is supposed to be. Sometimes it matters...

Hi karools16

Just to say how sorry l am & wish you a belated 70th 💐

What a terrible experience, I do hope you feel better soon. You definetly can't reduce your Prednisolone for the time being, you need to finish your antibiotic & then see how you feel.

Bless You 🌺

Get Well Soon 🌺

Having just recovered from 6 days of D and V last week I can sympathise with you. My main worry was also the vomiting of a warfarin dose then how to keep taking it, prednisone and b/p meds down. Lovely Dr from out of hours kept closely in touch getting me through the darkest times and keeping me at home. Diagnosed as Norovirus, worst tummy upset ever, wouldn't have wished it on my worst enemy!!

Nannie-C, I bet that felt like the 'stuffing knocked out of you'? My hospital gp took me off both Zemtard, for high BP, and Furosemide, as I am dehydrated. Apart from low BP, on arrival, my BP was the best ever without the tablets. I have a Cardio appt. soon and will be asking him about this.

Hope you are resting.
