Hi,

Answer to both posts - PMR doesn't normally give you chest pains. Can you give bit more information on background and dx - I.e. What tests done etc to eliminate other illnesses? When dx, what starting dose etc.

NSAIDs won't control your PMR, if that's what you have, the only thing that will control the inflammation associated with PMR is Pred. Plus you shouldn't take NSAIDs along side Pred, can cause stomach ulcers etc.

Sorry, can't be more specific, but we do need a bit more info from you please.

I went to an orthopedic surgeon believing that I was going to have to have a shoulder replaced. Five years before I had hip replacement. He did x-rays MRI blood work sedimentation rates C-reactive protein multiple other blood work. I am taking Mobic and 30 mg of Prednisone daily last night for whatever reason I was having just sharp pain in the upper abdomen I feel like I have heartburn all the time this confuses me?

If you are taking Mobic and 30mg pred I'm hardly surprised you have upper gastric pain! Are you on a PPI (omeprazole or something similar)?

Mobic/meloxicam is an NSAID and contraindicated alongside corticosteroids. I'm sure the manufacturers claim it is "less gastroirritant" but less is not none. 30mg pred alone can cause severe gastric irritation for many people.

If you are on 30mg pred and still have "PMR" pain - I'd be somewhat doubtful it is PMR. 30mg should be well enough to manage PMR and you shouldn't need any further pain-relief. It won't be 100% but it should be liveable with with lifestyle changes.

If, on the other hand, Mobic is cutting the mustard with the pain - I seriously doubt it is PMR.

I don't believe Mobic is doing anything at all. But I'm learning through all of everyone's knowledge what makes sense and what doesn't make sense. The pain with prednisone completely gone I have no pain whatsoever so I'm thrilled about that, I guess what I'm not understanding is why he feels I need Mobic and or Celebrex it makes no sense to me and everything I'm reading?

You don't need Mobic/Celebrex and don't take it. He probably doesn't know enough about PMR to know you won't need it once you are sorted on pred.

You could try reducing by 2.5mg and see if that also works for you, maybe even 5mg less. The usual recommended starting dose for years has been 15-20mg, the latest recommendations are the lowest dose in the range 15-25mg that works, so 30mg is on the high side and long at that dose will cloud the view for the rheumy when you get one - and they may demand you reduce drastically so they can see you without a high dose of pred since 30mg of pred would get a result in a lot of things!

You're absolutely correct I'm reducing the dose affected today and as he said I have to wean myself off slowly and that's what I'm going to begin doing once again everyone thank you from the bottom of my heart this is made me feel safe and supported something I needed badly.

Hi ,

I can well understand how worried you are, hopefully finding us and you expressing your concerns may help a little.

If you are getting heartburn type pains have you been prescribed a PPI to help - Omeprazole or similar? In U.K. they are usually prescribed with steroids, although they don't agree with everybody. But if you're taking NSAIDs as well as steroids then I would hazard a guess that's your problem. Some people swear by probiotic or natural yoghurt to aid digestion.

As PMRpro has said, and you have agreed, a Rheumy appt is imperative, do hope you get one soon.

Same as DL has said. If you are diagnosed with PMR why are you under an orthopaedic physician? It's a rheumatology problem and needs their expertise because PMR is a diagnosis of exclusion and there are other potentially nastier things than can cause the symptoms.

He's been trying to get me into a rheumatologist and I have been trying to get into a rheumatologist he said he wasn't going to leave me alone on the journey until he felt good about me being with a rheumatologist. I have strong reservations about taking celebrex and I will be calling his office Monday to tell him I'm not taking it. Also Monday, I'm going to be standing in the rheumatologist office until they see me or set an appointment LOL I'm just so damn scared.

That's very nice of him - but he really does need to read up on best practice if it is PMR.

Your right, hetc has been kind but out of his medical realm.

When I was a child of ten I'm not 65 I had rheumatic fever. I was in the hospital for 4 months until they released me to home. As you know that's an autoimmune disease as well perpetrated by strep untreated. I'm trying so hard not to be sad butt I cannot tell you how grateful I am I found this site thanks to all who are helping me through this.

I'm glad you found this forum too nancyannehanson. I have been greatly helped by the hand holding and information to be found here. With all the help around you hopefully you will be feeling stronger and less sad soon. No wonder you're thinking about what must have been a traumatic and isolating time when you were 10 away from home with Rheumatic Fever. Can't help feeling there's a link in there physically and emotionally. I'm glad Dorsetlady and PMRpro are on your case! 🌹
