Has anyone given up their job due to the PMR and steroids? I was working part time in my local garden centre which I loved, due to lifting and bending as well as standing for eight hours was far too much and I was unable to cope. I hope to go back when I feel more in control of the pain etc. Would love to here if anyone has stopped working. I'm fortunate as my husband has a good job and supports me although I do feel as though I should be at work but I can't at the moment. 🌻
Working on pred.: Has anyone given up their job due... - PMRGCAuk
Working on pred.
I work in a very physically demanding job and now my employers are doing, with my agreement, a Risk Assessment. Am worried that I'll get the sack. PMRGCAuk have advised me to contact CAB to find out my rights.
I am a self-employed counsellor which has been a much easier job to do than yours as it is not that physical. Nevertheless, I had to cut down my work considerably about 1 year into the PMR as I was getting virus after virus. As soon as I cut down, the viruses went away. My job may not be physically demanding but it is emotionally demanding and that was the problem. Since then, I have had to continue to keep an eye on what I am doing and not do too much. I really wish I could do more as counselling has always been my passion, but I get flare ups so easily that I can't afford to.
Hi - I have a stressful management job - stress does not go well with this condition. I took one month off 4 months after PMR/gca diagnosis then a further month off 3 months later - each time because of flares and I had already reduced my hours. After second absence of a month I had another flare 3 months later. So I am now signed off for 3 months - I am seriously doubting if I will return. I am feeling a little better (but more importantly no more flares) so I am worried if I return will I go back to the beginning again - emotionally that would be a devastating blow but financially difficult if I leave. To me, this condition has been life changing and I have had to look at everything I do in a different way, but I realise my health is the most important thing and I can't just will this condition away with stubbornness and determination, which i think many of us try to do.
Best wishes

Hi. I was diagnosed pmr & Gca at age 49 just about 2 years ago. I had just terrible side effects of steroids that I couldn't work. I retired on ill health after 33 years in NHS. I still miss it everyday but felt pushed into retirement. Still not feeling great on 7mg but just had to learn to take things easier. I do hope to perhaps take on a wee part time job when I feel stronger. I have Fibromyalgia and Diabetes also.
I am 59 and need health insurance, therefore I work fulltime. At times I don't know if I can work another day. I have a clerical job that demands close attention to details! My supervisor has called me on some cases that I did not do correctly! How discouraging! I pay special attention to what I am doing; evidently, I don't think/see things as they are! I am afraid I'll be released from my job! I keep telling my GP my concern, but they don't see that I am to that level yet. I even told them I thought possibly I may need to go on disability until I am past this. Again, they don't seem I am to this level yet. Other issues I have that I don't want to explain in detail, but very embarrassing to have happen at work that can't be controlled. I do the best I can day by day!
Gardening is my passion and the way I fight the prednisolone weight gain, but I am retired I could not do it as a job since the PMR patsy69
