I always eat yoghurt for breakfast with fruit and cereal, but whether or not it has affected the way I react to pred, I really can't say, though I don't seem to have as much trouble as many of the posters on this site. Maybe I should give some credit to the yoghurt!

A good many of us here will suggest a live yoghourt before you take the Pred. It lines the stomach and may possibly help to prevent Pred irritating the stomach lining - apart from any other health benefits it brings. It's also very useful for those afflicted by oral thrush, which can be a side effect of Pred.

I ate 'live' yoghurt with my breakfast and before taking the steroids throughout my years of steroid treatment after experiencing immediate horrid side effects from the usual stomach protection meds prescribed alongside the steroids and although I previously had eaten a fair amount of 'live' yoghurt, I decided to increase it on a daily basis in the hope that it would act as a stomach protector whilst on Pred. It proved very successful for me in that I never once experienced any stomach or esophagus problems during my years on steroids even on the very high starting dose of 40mgs. Many years ago, someone I worked for told me that his brother, a surgeon, recommended eating 'live' yoghurt following antibiotic treatment to replace the good bacteria in the stomach that may have been depleted by the antibiotics.

Hi I have been taking natural yog should it really be live yog , my husband has hiatus hernia would this be good for him instead of omeprazole .

All yogurt you buy from the chiller is live - only ones that keep without being in the frig aren't, they're heat treated. Some have added cultures that are said to be better for you. With hiatus hernia you would need to be careful - you do need to prevent reflux but there is no harm in trying yog and seeing if he can manage with a lower dose at least.

Been taking Pred for 11 months (May 2013) and I've always done 2 things - Munch Bunch yoghurt tube (just the right size) followed by a rest to let the Pred "cook" before starting my day. Works every time :-)

I have been making kefir since last September which apparently has even more varied bacteria than yoghurt and digestion is fine or could it be coincidence!

lucky12, I have a hiatus hernia and have been eating yoghourt for years, in my opinion it does help me. Natural yoghourt and live yoghourt and usually the same thing. It does have to be a live one though and full fat is better as the low fat versions are loaded with sugar to give some taste.

He should not stop taking the omeprazole. I hope he takes it half an hour before eating as that is what is usually prescribed.

As polkadot has said, it should be 'live' (probiotic) yoghurt for the most beneficial health properties. The one I eat is 'live', organic and fat-free without any added ingredients - the only sugar it contains is milk's naturally occurring sugar (lactose).

Because of the good advice on this forum I have been taking my pred with live, fat free, plain yoghourt (no additives at all) every morning for the past 5 months and have never experienced any stomach problems. I was never prescribed any anti-acid medication by my G.P. but don't need it.
