Could be levator ani syndrome. I have that, it is basically an inability to relax the muscles that need to be relaxed for insertion. I always need the "virgin" speculum and can't use tampons either. Some people get better with physical therapy, but it's no fun!!

Thanks for answering my question, i dont think its that,i am waiting to go into hospital for a biopsy taken from my cervix, i dont think they know what it is yet either.

There are a lot of things that can cause this. Is the pain external or internal ? that can give a clue

Hi judyB the pain is internal, this is just a recent thing,it was after i had gone for a smear test, the Dr couldnt insert the speculum,as it was so painful,i had never experienced this problem before ,

I suffer with this problem on and off where it feels very tight/uncomfortable. It's a diffucult pain to describe though, at one point I thought I was going to tear the inside of my vagina as it felt really stretched. I also get it where it feels like just inside it's tighter than further in. I know it's an embarrassing thing to discuss so I haven't really spoken to my gp about it. I've told him internals hurt and sex hurts half the time and he's put it down to my adhesions caused by an infection from the coil and endometriosis. I have since been diagnosed with possible adenomyosis too. I have noticed that if I haven't been for a number 2 in a day or so then this problem gets worse.

Sorry I have no answers for you but I know that painful examinations, painful sex and tightness are all symptoms of endometriosis so it might be worth talking to your gp about this.

Good luck xx

hi thanks mssteal, for telling me about your experience with this problem,i am at the moment waiting on an appointment to go into hospital to have a general anaesthetic and they are going to put a camera inside for a look and also take a biopsy of my cervix to see if there is anything untoward going on,i hope by the new year that i get an appointment very soon, i hope you get your problem sorted out soon.

Thank you xx

The problem could be the skin inside the vagina being fragile - esp if you are post menopausal, that's why they suggest oestrogen cream - premarin etc which basically plumps up the tissue. For me oestrogen causes a massive reaction with my PNE and have to use emu oil as a substitute, which i insert every night. The one i use has no additives which is wonderful. Just a thought.

I would also suggest you consider seeing a Physical Therapist who specializes in Pelvic Floor Disorders and if you can see a Pudendal Nerve Specialist - there are only a few in the U.S. but I am going to Dr. Antolak in Minneapolis even though I live in New Mexico. He has been treating me with steroid injections and they have helped.
