Has anyone got a retroverted uterus and do you have pain?
I have had a seated lumbar MRI for low back pain but I am concerned with what looks like an extremley retroverted uterus which looks like it is laying right next to my coccyx. I have had two previous pelvic surgeries one in 2018 one in 2019.
I have incredible coccyx pain, rectal pressure, I find sitting longer than 10minutes very painful. I have low lumbar pain, sacrum pain, hip pain, right groin pain, my abdominal organs feel like they have been kicked constantly. I get numbness in my thigh, tingling and weakness in my legs. I also have painful periods and the pain starts in my legs four days before I am due to start.
Here is the mri showing my retroverted uterus.
Can anyone relate? I feel like I am going round in circles with pain.

Yes I do, it used to cause me painful periods, but doctors told me it was fine. I also have Tarlov cysts these are painful too, a lot of people who have a retroverted uterus seem to have these. MRI shows these cysts near spine, I don’t see them on your photo, check your report make sure it does not say Tarlov cysts, these cysts do cause pain, some doctors say not. Only two specialists sort these cysts in UK if causes pain. Arthritis can cause pains too. Hope you get sorted.Suzie
Thanks for your reply. I have asked my consultant about tarlov cysts but he said its a negative, he did say my uterus looked very low though - this was a spinal consultant though so onto Gyney.
Hi there I’ve just had lumbar mri for unexplained low back , buttock , hip , groin and thigh pain . Also get rectal pressure , tailbone pain and my low stomach same side as my back pain aches like hell , also have retroverted uterus , I have no idea what’s causing this but it’s been a pretty painful 6 months the spasms in my buttock was so bad I couldn’t walk for weeks x
Blimey, it sounds just like me! I have been told today by my spinal consultant it could be DDD of my L5/S1 disc which has an annular fissure, or facet joint degeneration on the L5/S1 and L4/5 facets or muscle.
I get back spasms on my right which is also where all of my pelvic pain is/has been. I get like sharp shooting nerve pain from around my back to the right side deep in my abdomen but the tailbone pain/ pressure is relentless when sitting. I can only manage to sit for 10minutes at a time and even then I have done too much - this has been going on for 2 years now. I am only comfortable on my sides with my legs up slightly and the pressure on my sacrum when laying on my back is unforgiving. I feel like I haven't 'relaxed' for all this time and always feel tense because of the pain on sitting.
I have don spinal physiotherapy which has helped my posture but not the pain, I am seeing womans pelvic floor specialist to see if they can identify anything...it is interesting though because today I discussed my uterus with my spinal consultant! I put it to him that he sees lots of MRI scans and has he ever seen a uterus placed so low in the pelvic area, so much so the rectum seems elusive? and his reply was 'ooo yeah, it actually does look low' he flipped through both of my MRI's and is going to mention it in my write up to my GP.
There was also incidental findings on my MRI that the small bowel looks stuck together of which he said he agreed with so I am having that investigated too.
I hope that might help you with questions to ask for your investigations and I thank you for your response! it helps to know I am not going mad (even though I don't wish pain especially this kind upon anyone) just finding someone with the same makeup, and symptoms is a bit of a relief. Can I ask if you have ever had pelvic surgery before?
In 2018 I had a laparotomy to remove a 10cm dermoid cyst from my right ovary, this had been causing me to projectile vomit, painful menses like labour pains, my whole body would shake in shock it was horrible (right side is the back pain, groin and leg pain now)they left my ovary in. (not my decision)
In 2019 after months of pain they removed my right ovary and found it had turned into a massive ovarian edema. I don't know if this adhered to anything as they also had to removed my fallopian tube.
I too had severe spasms right side low back was given muscle relaxers had to pay a chiropractor to help me it’s was the worse pain I’ve ever had in my life !! Even now I can’t sit for more than 10 minutes , I’m under investigation as they think the pain in my lower stomach is my bowel ! I’m thinking it’s prob my back or something called psoas muscle as I get it back and front , really struggle to bend and even walk some days , ultrasound abdomen clear , bloods normal , was sent for physio because I could bend that day he sent me packing and told me to do Pilates and said well I am nearly 50 the cheeky bugger ! 🤣x
