Hello Jtxx.

Well I've not had any antibiotics/penicillin since 1999, that was for me the only prescription prior to 2010 when I got urso.

I wasn't allergic to the amoxcillin back then but haven't a clue now with PBC. I know my late father back in the 1990's had a reaction to penicillin and was deemed allergic as he ended up in hospital due to it. He never knew he was allergic to it prior so I wonder if one can become allergic.

As yet I've had no penicillin with knowing about PBC so I can't say if I'll tolerate it now.

Hi

Yes have been all my life - well since I was about 9... Can take other non penicillin antibiotics and use topical creams. Apparently allergies are all part of your immune system as well. I seem to have lots of allergic reactions to things - makeup, washing powder, urso capsules, insect bites.......

Lou

I have a penicilin allergy for 30 odd years, but I am given other antibiotics since I was diagnosed with PBC and yes you can become allergic, well I did anyway as I was okay with it before I had the allergic reaction to it.

I had penicillin when I was a child up until my early twenties, then i became allergic to it. My face came up in large red wheals that stung.

I also have sensitive skin to products.

Thanks for your replies. I took a reaction about 5 yrs ago. Only diagnosed with PBC last year. I know that you can suddenly become allergic to something that you have preciously been okay with. It was just the autoimmune connection I was interested in. Probably totally unrelated to PBC. X

Yes, I'm allergic to penicillin. The reaction made me sicker than the strep throat that I was being treated for as a child. I had taken it several times before with no problems. Take this allergy seriously, the reaction can make you extremely sick. Best regards!

I too, am allergic to penicillin. I wasn't until my 30's. I broke out in a rash, and my limbs felt weak. I also can't take narcotics without itching and having nausea. Darvocet will make me have pain in my stomach and vomiting.

yes been allergic for 30 yrs but not aware of any link, however its more likely that an infection contracted at some stage made your immune system behave in a way that causes autoimmune disease, and thats not my opinion but well documented evidence

Isn't codeine 2 types of drugs in one? I know I've taken it a long time ago. In fact back when I was a kid in the 1970's the 'in thing' for aches and pains was Fennings Little Healers, an aspirin powder that we mixed with a drink (milk usually) if anyone can recall these.

Paracetamol didn't seem to be as rife back then as I recall. I know 20 odd yrs ago when I had a really bad headache whilst on holiday I went out and bought aspirin (I don't and never have a medicine cabinet as I've to be desperate to reach for any pills. Ironic end up on urso that is prob going to be with me for the rest of my life....).

I've never had an problem with aspirin but now all we hear is it can cause stomach ulcers and various other things but paracetamol can be as leathal. I know I'd be very reluctant at present to take paracetamol given it can have liver-damaging properties.

Be interesting to know then what painkillers people on this site use for pain relief tho'.

Not allergic to penicillin but I am to codeine. I cant take any of the opium based medicines either. They make me sick and cause headaches that are off the scale.

I am only able to tolerate paracetamol.

Get a allergic reaction to NSAIDs as well - which affect my breathing quite badly.

I am allergic to penicillin, have been since my mid 20's. I also have a very bad reaction to codeine (only since I had my gall bladder out, which lead to PBC diagnosis recently). Codeine gives me so much pain (liver spasms sounds right!) and makes me sick. My other half nearly called an ambulance last time I took codeine. I haven't taken it since.
