jaundice

This is the result of elevated bilirubin levels.

Initially, is it visible only in the whites of the eyes having a yellow tint to them. In liver disease, It is a failure of the bilirubin flowing into the bile ducts - or a failure of the flow of bile leading it to back flow into the blood.

In PBC it is usually seen in end stages of liver disease. Most patients never have jaundice occur. If jaundice does occur, serious consideration should be given as to whether the patient needs to be considered for transplantation.

In adults, a normal level would be considered between .2-1.3.
