This is one of the two sources of blood flow to the liver - the other being from the hepatic vein.
This dual blood flow is unique to the liver.
Most of the blood flowing into the liver comes from the portal vein. All the blood supply to the bile ducts comes from the hepatic artery. Hepatic artery problems only occur after liver transplantation when a clot in the artery can be an early complication.
