NAFLD - non alcoholic fatty liver disease

This is a very common chronic disease characterized by the deposit of fat in the liver cells.

When it is also accompanied by inflammation it is known as NASH. This stands for non alcoholic steatohepatitis.

NAFLD is said to be the biggest chronic liver disease now. It often is associated with obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Although it isn't specifically associated with PBC, given that PBC is becoming more frequently diagnosed in the general population, we are seeing more and more of it.

Dr Jones writes that " the presence of NAFLD in a PBC patient can complicate the assessment of the blood tests and limit the effectiveness of the PBC therapy.
