Colesevelam for itch

I have been on finofibrate and rifampcin for my itch but neither helped. My pharmacist told me colesevelam can help. Has anyone here tried it, and was it effective? I'm at my wits end with incessant scratching.

Hi! I am not familiar with that. I did read on it.... it can have GI issues as many drugs do. If you take vitamins or other certain drugs, there has to be a time space between taking all of these. It can greatly increase your tryglycerides so if you take it, monitor those with your other lab work. I did read in Dr.Jones' book he refers patients often to take Naltrexone if Rifampicin is not effective. You might talk to your pharmacist about this. As I don't know what other medications or health conditions you have, just make sure whatever you do take is compatible with other issues/medications. Did you see the list of itching 'do's and don'ts' I just posted the other day? Might have some helpful hints for you. I remember all too well how awful the itching was for me as well. Take a look at that list I posted..... hope you find something that at least helps in some way.

Hi Donna, Thanks for the info. I do space out the drugs, but still not finding relief. Naltrexone seems to have negative side effects so I'm leery about taking it. How do I get to your post about your list?

Donna - you say how awful the itching was for you - has it stopped? If so, how?

Remember I've had a transplant almost 20 years ago. My itching beforehand was awful. Everything I tried didn't really help. This was back in the early 2000's. I wasn't aware at the time of any medication to take - nor was I offered any if it was available. Actually the itching and jaundice disappeared as soon as I had the transplant. It was truly miraculous! I know how consuming the itch can be. I hope for each of you, that you find something that even helps a little. Did you see the 'file' of DO's and DONT's about itching?

What a relief that must have been for you. Where can I find the do's and don't about itching? I've searched but can't find it.

hi I’ve been on colesevelam for about 6 months, it’s helped a bit but doesn’t take it away. I have been on a glisten trial for about 6 months also and that drug has really helped but gave me a lot of stomach pain so I’m now off the trial and looking for another option as my itch is back already x

Hya Carly

I had very severe itching and tried all the usual meds. Nothing worked until sertraline. I take 25mg a day and have had NO itching!!!! It was a miracle. The constant itch kept me from getting any sleep and I was scratching until I would bleed.

hope this helps❤️

God bless, Anni

Hi Anni, I'm glad the sertraline works for you. Do you suffer from any side effects while you'r on it?

No side effects. But here lately I've been cutting my 25 MG in half daily. It's a very low dose and enough to stop the itch completely. I am so thankful.
